Help Vista on UltraBay HD, multiples issues T60p

#1 Post by blynch » Sat Apr 28, 2007 3:27 pm

Clean installed vista onto an extra hd in the ultrabay.
Used system update and such.
Ran easytransfer to transfer settings from XP primary HD.

Working pretty well, I like it so far. Settings for outlook transfered well. But the one major problem I have is that when in vista I cannot write to the primary drive with XP on it.

After vista install, ultrabay drive E became C and my C became D. When I remove the HD with vista on it I get an error at startup, but I can cancel the error and XP will boot.

List of Problems
1. Major problem I don't know why in vista I do not have permission to edit files or write to the XP drive, I am signed in on the administrative account.

2. Slightly annoying error when vista drive is removed at bootup.

3. Cannot get bluetooth to connect to a bluetooth mouse or phone. I installed the stack from lenovo.

4. Presentation director is not working right.Fn-F7 switches screens instead of bringing up options which it is set to do. Also no 1680x1050 setting available (I have seen this problem in another post), which makes it completely useless for me while docked.

5. Fn-F5/F8 don't work. Can't toggle wireless or trackpoint/touchpad.

6. Can't get windows mobile phone to sync with anything except media player.

Thats about it, problem have some other issues but those are the ones I've found so far.

Anyone have any solutions?
Thanks, B

2. Vista installs a boot manager on your XP drive if the XP drive was in the laptop during installation. I recommend removing the XP drive from the laptop during installation of Vista. After installation of Vista, put XP drive back in. Whichever drive is in the main hard drive slot will be the default boot drive. Press F12 at beginning of boot sequence to choose to boot OS in Ultraslim Bay drive.

3. My experience with Bluetooth is that only the drivers installed during the Vista Install work. After boot up, turn on Bluetooth radio, and the Microsoft drivers will install themselves. Unfortunately they do not have all the features of the Lenovo drivers.

4. Be sure you are using the latest drivers. New ATI drivers were released April 27, 2007. I suggest installing the monitor driver from Lenovo as well. See also 5. below.

5. You need the following installed:
I. ACPI Power Management driver, version 1.41.
II. Lenovo System Interface Driver, version 1.0.
III. I suggest also Power Manager, version 2.01.
IV. Hotkey Driver, version 2.00.0611.

6. Don't know.

if thats the case, if i have:
-main bay = xp
-ultrabay = vista

..and if i have them both in the machine then boot using the ultrabay, the vista drive (ultrabay) will be C: and the XP drive (main) and if i boot using the main drive as normal, there wont be any side effects?

Whichever drive is booted becomes drive C: regardless of which bay it's located in.

thanks for the input.

I had thought about taking out the xp driving when installing vista, but didn't think it would make a difference--apparently not. Anyway I can fix that now without reinstalling vista and xp, like a simple way to remove the boot manager that Vista installs on the xp drive?

1. I've got around this problem by disabling UAC, is this actually helpful in protecting my computer? I am the only user so I don't have to worry about other users screwing up my stuff. --I looked at the link kulivontot posted, and it was about changing the driver letter, not sure how that would fix my accessing problems.

5. I have the latest ATI drivers from Lenovo. Are the ATI drivers from ati any different? I have all but iv installed already, missed that last one, will see if it works now after a reboot.

3. This seems like a stupid question, but how do I delete the bluetooth stack I installed from lenovo and revert back to the vista drivers?

update:

Fn buttons are now working, and bluetooth is also working. Used Fn-F5 and enabled bluetooth, apparently it wasn't on before, so now it works.

Bluetooth doesn't work for my motorola HT820 headphones, not sure why, apparently vista can't find drivers.

I just went through the Bluetooth thing with XP. AFAIK, Microsoft's drivers just don't include all the features of the Lenovo drivers. You can read about my experience with that in the following thread:
http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=40672

You can fix the boot manager by using the following:
Rescue and Recovery - Recovery repair diskette
