Tercels are definitely a bit long in the tooth.
They are rather basic means of transportation, most of them butt-ugly.
Unless someone gives it to you for free, I would suggest to look at a bit more up-to-date model Corolla, if you want to stay with Toyota.
You can read up on Tercels in the wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_Tercel

the best word to describe a tercel is BLAND. no frills, no excitement, no nothing. a 1996 i would be surprised if it had a tape player, cruise control or air conditioning.

In my opinion, the Tercel is the epitome of budget. However, in my experience, less features means less things that can break. It also means less stuff the insurance can charge you for!

If you can get one in good condition for cheap enough it's worth considering (make sure it's a 5th gen so you can have the newest available). However, I'd probably edge for a Camry just because the Tercel is too small for my tastes.

my tercel was a '91 bought used at Cobb County Toyota in '96: great car
good on highway, good in city, easy to drive, didn't use much gas. With
fancy $12.00 plastic wheel covers from Kmart, we turned heads. A ferrari
guy was sucked in, one time.

but unfortunately I decided to go sailing--so goodbye little tercel.

Is $2500 considerably a good price tag for this used Toyota Tercel 1996? Usually around what price this car cost?

Thanks :)

That sounds a bit pricey. You can buy a 1996 Volvo 850 Station wagon with leather seats, air conditioning, cruise control, other creature comforts, loads of space, no rust for about double that. Considering how basic a Tercel is, it seems high. If it is in truly excellent condition (zero repairs pending, no rust, no accidents, service record, etc) it might be ok. ... JDH

I bought Tercel 1997 a year ago just for fun. I bought it for $2900, from 2nd owner with full service record, "black hawk" edition, $800 rims, alpine music with subwoofer, amplifier in excellent condition. I am extremely satisfied. Not a single problem. If you add 36-41 MPG...well it is very nice.
I found a photo for you :)

It is small for me (I`m 6.4, 235lbs :) ) but I just love this car. Just do not compare this little toyota to bigger cars and more expensive cars. That is not the point. Tercel is very low maintenance car and cheap on gas and that is key point for me in this category.

I would get a corolla instead of a Tercel.

It means the cost for keeping the car on the road is low, low maintenance/service prices, low parts prices, requires low amount of time looking after it, etc.
