Data corruption over wireless link

#1 Post by primedude » Mon Oct 04, 2004 11:57 pm

I've noticed that while browsing the internet over my wireless link, I'll frequently experience corruption of downloaded data. This manifests itself through courrupted PDFs, garbled images, static in downloaded music, and corrupted installer files. This has occurred while I have used my computer with a variety of wireless base stations. I have the Intel 2200B/G card in a T42 2378FVU.

There is a simple test I could do to resolve this issue -- namely, seeing if the corruption occurs over a wired connection -- but for a variety of reason, I just haven't had a chance to get that done yet. (Ridiculous, I know.) So there may be a simple fix to this problem. But for now, is this a problem that has been observed by anyone else, and is there anything I might try doing to correct it?

Thanks.

[censored], I should have read more closely - I already see a couple posts about this issue. So I'm not going crazy. I'm filing a trouble ticket today.

I love my Thinkpad, but I've had a few problems with it. I'd be frustrated by now if it weren't for the incredible level of support provided by IBM.

Wow, got a call back from IBM at 1:45 in the morning, about ten minutes after I filed the ticket. Amazing.

However, the recommendation was to take the computer to IBM-contracted local repair shops. I don't know what will come of this. I have on-site service, but I think that's probably not appropriate for this issue - I don't mind sending my computer back for a day or two if there's a better chance of getting this resolved that way.

Any advice? From a quick glance at the board, it looks like this is a problem with the 2200BG, or at least some 2200BGs. I wish they'd just swap it out. Grrr...

I started having the same problems after upgrading to version 8.1.0.25 of the driver. Then I switched back to 8.0.12.2000 and haven't had the problem. I'd love know what the final resolution is.

I have been using 8.1.026 for 6 weeks and do not have the issue.

8.0.12 can bluescreen XP when it's used with WPA.

andyk, thanks for the tip. I'll try that for now. I don't use WPA so that BSOD issue hopefully should not crop up.

In the meantime, could anyone having this problem please let IBM know you're having it? The tech I spoke to last night had never heard of it occurring, so I'd like to make sure we can get a version of the driver that neither corrupts data nor blue screens Windows.

I'm not having that problem with my b/g T42 but if I had paid for onsite service, I'd want them to come to me! How come you can get a wireless connection but not a wired connection to check this (most routers have wired ports on the back)?

One more update: I applied the older version of the driver (had to obtain it from Intel) and it does indeed work. I haven't tried it with WPA, though, so if you're having this problem and you need WPA, that's probably not a solution.

As far as the wired connection goes, my home router is situated in a spot where I don't have a cable long enough to plug in my laptop. Nor have I had a chance to go somewhere else to test out in the connection since I first observed it a few weeks ago.

Now that I have a solution, I'm going to wait for future driver revisions from IBM; I just hope they are aware of this problem.

Thanks to everyone on this thread and the other one for their suggestions. I applied the newest version of the Intel driver 8.1.0.28 (http://support.intel.com/support/wirele ... 010623.htm) and it is working fine with WPA. As everyone else said, don't use the old version if you plan on using WPA, it was causing me blue screens frequently.

IBM will eventually make the newer revision available on their website, they take a while to release new driver revisions.

where does one file the ticket? i don't have time to call and convince a customer care representative of my issue.

Fn+F5 key still works as before. The Intel tray utility does have a shortcut to turn off the radio though.

I was experiencing the same problem in Sep. Whenever I tried to download somthing large than 500k, usually I had to try more than 3 times to get a correct one. But I guess I found a way to solve this problem.

1. Just download the latest driver from Intel and decompress it.
2. Do NOT install it by running the EXE file. Instead, manually update the driver from "device manager"

I updated it one week ago. For the passing week, everything seems to be ok. CTRL-F5 also works!

And what I should do now is just to wait for IBM to release the updated driver and update it again.
