160GB Drive for my t42 2373

#1 Post by jerseysteve » Mon Apr 30, 2007 10:16 am

Hi - like others I have run out of room and need a new drive. I saw the thread comparing Hitachi and Samsung however my 2 choices are

1. Seagate Momentus 5400.3 ST-9160821A
2. Hitachi Travelstar 5K160 HTS541616J9AT00

Also will I have the full capacity or any error messages?

Thanks

Seagate is infinitely better but the Hitachi is cheaper (much cheaper!) - atleast where I am.

I bought the Hitachi for about $80 less than the Seagate.

For what it's worth, I have two of the Seagate 160s in my T42p - one in the main drive bay, and one in the second HD adapter that slides into the UltraBay Slim.

Both drives have worked very well for me over the past 3 months, they are fast and quiet. But - be careful when you first format them, especially if you are using XP. I had a bit of difficulty formatting them - they appeared to format OK, but actually didn't. So, after you format them, do a chkdsk /r or chkdsk /f routine on them and make sure that they pass OK before you start stuffing data on them.

I don't think there was anything wrong with the drives, I think perhaps either the ThinkPad or Windows didn't quite get the formatting right the first time. It could also be because I used Partition Magic 8 to format them - I do not recommend this application at all, stay away from it.

wait--i get it. there are ATA and SATA versions. But on Newegg the ATA version has a lousy track record. Out of 62 reviews the average review is three out of five. Many people report drive failures. 23% of respondents rate it a 1 (poor) on scale of 1 to 5.
