Just bought my T42!

#1 Post by EvilTee » Tue Oct 05, 2004 6:30 pm

I just purchased a new T42 with the fingerprint reader because IBM is offering a huge discount on these notebooks. Going through the EPP page, I ordered the model 2379R9U for $1591.85. That's after a 35% discount from the Web Price of $2449.00. I was going to hold out for the major Q1 2005 refresh, but I couldn't pass up this price. I think this is a great deal. Just wanted to give you guys a heads up on this since IBM seems to drop back the discount to the 10 - 15% range after a while.

Oh, sorry. EPP is the Employee Purchase Plan site where friends and family of an IBM employee can buy IBM products at a discount. I am assuming that this is the same for the SPP or Shareholder Purchase Plan site. So if you own a share of IBM stock, you should be able to access the new pricing.

Thanks, I wonder if anyone can verify that IBM shareholders get the same discount.

Here it is...

EPP Login Page

Just ask your friend for his employee number. Usually they can forward you a link as well to offer you these deals.

Had my T42 a week

#10 Post by MSE Environmental » Wed Oct 06, 2004 12:53 pm

Received my T42 ( 2378FZU) last week. Got a great deal using IBM Friends purchasing option and got it for $1614.00, also sprung for the IBM Nylon carrying case (on sale for $35).

This is a wonderful computer. I used a ThinkPad about 5 years ago, but since have been a faithful Dell user. After a week I can tell you the T42 is vastly superior to the 5100 I was using. (I've given it to my office manager, so as a desktop replacement it is still quite viable).

My favorite features so far are:

1. Light weight
2. Reading light for nocturnal or late night work on a plane
3. Pointing device. I had forgotten how much I liked it on my old ThinkPad. I hate touchscreens
4. Keyboard. Much more sturdy feeling than the Dell.
5. Wireless set up. Very easy, upgraded my old 802.11b network with a D-Link DI-624 and it was a snap.
6. Nylon Case. The IBM basic nylon case is really better than I expected. I am replacing a good, but very heavy High Sierra bag with it.

The last straw on the Dell was when I traveled to the Middle East and Europe last month. My computer bag had to have weighed over 20 lbs. and lugging it through airports was more than I cared to do. With the new computer and new bag, I'm traveling much ligher now!

If any of you are on the fence, go ahead and pull the trigger. I only wish I had done it sooner.

Mike

Thats great, I have a quick question about buying throught the EPP program, does the IBM employee actually have to pay for the Thinkpad and have it shipped to him/herself or can the family member / friend pay for it by credit card and have it shipped to themselves. The reason I'm asking is that the person I know who works for IBM is in a different state than myself.

Nope. Your friend doesn't have to buy it for you. You can log into the site with his/her employee ID and pay for it on your own credit card. This site is available for all friends and family of an IBM employee to use.

EvilTee, I just want to thank you, I have just ordered my T42, the same model you ordered. I would never have known about this program if not for your post. To tell the truth I really wanted a 14" display model but the 2373R9U seems the best compromise between price and features and the display is flexview which I guess is a plus. My friend gave me his ID and the rest was a cinch. Again thank you very much, now I'll be able to get a nice external monitor to attach the Thinkpad to. I just hope delivery is closer to two weeks than to 4 weeks!

Thanks for the heads up!

A friend sent me his id in August and when I checked the prices the discounts weren't that great, 5 or 10% if I remember right. I went back tonight after seeing your post and got 35% off a T42p 2373KXU. For under $3400 including taxes and shipping I got the laptop, docking station and a warranty upgrade.

Anybody out there want to buy a Dell Precision M60, got one that's gonna hit eBay real soon...

Interesing that the T42 model I ordered last night 2379R9U is no longer on the list. Guess I just got in under the gun, and I was going to wait and order this morning.

In case you haven't checked out the threads, this deal was taken down by IBM this morning. The EPP website doesnt offer it anymore.

Jimg, did you order yours for just over $2000? I just noticed this morning that the EPP website has relisted this particular model, albeit for about $500 more.

The list was $4,349.00 and I got exactly 35% off that, $2826.85. I added some for a better warranty and a minidock and it came to $3,381.36 after shipping and taxes.

My tracking is already up, paid for 2 day but since it shipped on a Thursday it won't be here until Monday.

Here's the model I got, guess if you can't customize it ships quicker... This is my first IBM, always owned Dells up to now.

Thinkpad T42p 2373KXU

BTW, I just checked the EPP site and this model is still showing up for $2,826.85.

What I meant in my previous thread is that the EPP site does not offer the SPECIFIC model that this thread is about (T42 biometric for 1500K).

EPP site has the biometric version up for a few days before they took them out. I was lucky enough to order one - the $1600 one that they were talking about.

I just checked the order status. It told me that I need to contact IBM about my order. When I called, the sale rep. told me that I will have to wait a little bit longer for my order. It seems that IBM does not have some parts for my notebook and the delay will be around 3 to 4 weeks.

I think IBM will put BIOMETRIC model up again once they have all the parts back in stock agian, but I am not sure that the price will be the same or not.

Just F.Y.I.

I just saw it back up on the site. Unfortunately, the price is now at $2081.65. I think I read somewhere that the Biometric T42s aren't actually available until Oct. 19. So right now we have basically pre-ordered it. I say it'll probably arrive by the end of the month.

Please, no requests for EPP -- if you don't have one, you probably shouldn't ask. If one number gets out, then who knows how many ppl will grab at that one number to take advantage of the discount. It's just not fair to IBM or the rest of IBM EPP members (we'll probably get penalized for EPP abuse).
