SD card size limit?

#1 Post by jrw70 » Fri May 04, 2007 4:10 pm

Hi all, purchased a 4gig SD card and it's not recognised - any ideas on a possible size limit?

I have used a 2GB SD in X60's with no problems. I believe someone here or another forum found that this was the maximum (possibly from calling IBM service?). I know for sure that 2GB is the max. for the X4-series too. Even though the prices are nice now for 4GB cards I have resisted only because no device I have (or want) has been shown to work consistantly with 4GB cards. If you experiment and find a 4GB card that DOES work with your X60 please pass it on!

You need to make sure your SD card is not an SDHC card ... the X60 does not support SDHC cards.

I am not sure if it's realted or not but my old Z60m could perfectly recognize 4GB SD card.
"I've come a long, long way," she said, "and I will go as far,
With the man who takes me from my horse, and leads me to a bar."
The man who took her off her steed, and stood her to a beer,

It would be helpful if users can share brand names of their 4GB cards that worked. I read here that someone got a 4GB Kingston SDHC card to work in a X60s.

Since the X60/X60s do not have SDHC support, you need to look for SD 2.0 cards that do not have the SDHC logo.

Here is some info:
http://www.hjreggel.net/cardspeed/special-sd.html

And some candidates for you to consider:
OCZ
RIDATA
SimpleTech
Transcend

Your best bet would be to test before you buy ...

Strange, my SanDisk Ultra II 4.0GB SDHC card works just fine in my X60s. This is with Windows Vista, so maybe that's why it works.

Now that's very interesting ... it could be that the X60 hardware does support SDHC after all, contrary to the reports. If that's the case, it should work on XP as well, after applying Microsoft's SDHC support update:

With KB923293, I wonder if X60/s will support 8GB SDHC cards? If so that is a very good news.

My Kingston Elite Pro 50x 4GB SD card and a no-name brand 4GB card both work fine with XP (SP2). I too was just thinking about SD card capacity but I don't think my camera can take more than 4GB :(

Is that an SD card, or an SDHC card?

Kingston homepage indicates that only up to 2GB is available in Elite Pro series. All their 4GB SD cards are SDHC cards.

It's prolly because your camera can only read cards formatted to FAT filesystem. And FAT is limited to 2GB per partition.

If you could find someway to format it to partitions of 2GB, you probably could get it to work with your camera. But the camera might get confused when it sees more than 1 partition on the card.

It'a 4Gb formatted as FAT32. Doesn't say SDHC, just SD on the Kingston. Hmmm, wonder if I've got one of those fake cards - got it from ebay cheap !!

It's my understanding from meeting with SanDisk as recent tradeshows that standard SD cards can't go beyond 2GB. Any 4GB SD card would have to be a SDHC card, and the device would need to be compatible with SDHC cards (either natively or through a driver update).

I've been using an OCZ 4gb 150X SD card in my X60 without any problems. It is formatted to FAT32. The model number is OCZSD150-4GB. According to this manufacturer information,
http://www.ocztechnology.com/products/f ... mory_cards

the 4gb size is "Only compatible with SD 2.0 host products"

Nonetheless it works in XP Pro. The speed is limited by the speed of the card reader, which as noted before is quite slow.

Correct, the SD standard goes up to 2GB.
Any 4GB SD card would have to be a SDHC card,
Some manufacturers produced 4GB cards before the SDHC specs were settled. Those don't conform to any specs, so compatibility is hit or miss.
and the device would need to be compatible with SDHC cards (either natively or through a driver update).
Correct. If you've confirmed that an X60 with the correct drivers is compatible with one SDHC card, it should be compatible with all. But stay away from non SDHC 4GB cards, as you never know what you're getting.

SDHC, KB923293 and KB934428

#18 Post by uffuffa » Mon Aug 06, 2007 1:22 pm

Hello All - Newbie here...

Concerning SDHC noncompliance of the built-in SD card slot on the X60 series, it has been suggested that this might be an XP software issue and some have pointed to the KB923293 Hotfix from Microsoft as a possible solution. It is worth pointing out that this has been replaced by the KB934428 Hotfix. (NOTE: Try http://thehotfixshare.net/board/index.php? if you need these Hotfix solutions, as they are not available for download from the Microsoft website without special request).

QUESTION 1: Has anyone tried the newer KB934428? Any problems? Did it successfully convert your SDHC non-compliant card slot into one that accepts SDHC format? Has anyone noticed any problems having installed the KB923293 Hotfix? It appears that the latter has been successful for some whilst unsuccessful for others at making the X60 slot SDHC-compatible.

QUESTION 2: Despite the (few) success stories using the older KB923293 Hotfix, I'm finding it difficult to understand how this can be an XP software issue. I can successfully use my Transcend 4GB SDHC card (Class 6) using a USB Transcend Multi-Card Reader M2 (TS-RDM2), but I can not use the same card in the built-in SD slot. I have not installed either of the Hotfixes above. I would have thought that if it was an XP issue the SDHC would not work in either an external reader or the built-in slot. Could someone kindly explain this to me please?

USB card readers are using completely different drivers from the built-in SD slot (which is connected to the Ricoh PCCard controller). For USB card readers Windows uses the same USB Mass Storage drivers as for USB hard disks, which have no size limits AFAIK. For external card readers the hardware in reader is responsible for translating the SD card to a USB storage device.

Ahhh! Thanks pxa270 - that makes sense now. Anyways, am glad I bought the external reader because it's so much faster than my previous experiences using the inbuilt SD slot with 1GB non-SDHC cards :) That's why I haven't bothered with trying out either of the Hotfixes I mentioned, although I would be interested still to hear of successes/failures turning the SD slot into an SDHC compliant one and the related problems, if any. I ask about problems because Microsoft have not released these Hotfixes as routinely downloadable ones yet - suggests they are in testing stages still I guess.

I may one day install the KB934428 Hotfix, which supposedly adds functionality for >4Gb cards.

But for now, no need: I installed the KB923293 Hotfix last week on my X40. Since then I can use the X40's SDCard reader with my Transcend 8Gb SDHC class 6 card (which I use to transer AVI files made with a Canon Powershot TX1)

Haven't compared speed to the USB SDHC card reader. Doesn't really matter. I'm just happy I can leave another piece of hardware (the USB card reader) at home.

I'm happy to report that after I downloaded the KB934428 hotfix from hotfixshare.net and installed on my X41 tablet, and upon reboot, the SD slot was able to read Sandisk Ultra II 4GB SDHC.

i did not have 8GB SDHC to try. The SD slot was able to read 2GB SD cards without the hotfix whereas the Sandisk Micromate (SD, Micro SD version) readers can't even handle 2GB micro SD.

I have a Fry's Electronics 4GB SD card. It works fine in both the X60s and the x61s. I just had to reformat the card on the COMPUTER instead of using the camera.

I had no problems with the KB934428 hotfix, it worked great! I wasn't able to read my 4GB SDHC card until I installed it. The X60 built-in card reader is a lot more convenient to use than an external card reader.

Uffufa, thanks for the tip!
