Wowexec problem for 16-bit software sorted. (bad KERIO FW)

#1 Post by RealBlackStuff » Sat May 05, 2007 8:04 am

The other day I wanted to install the Netgear PS110 printserver on a T23 laptop.
Every time I inserted the CD, it spun up, but did nothing further, even though Autoplay is enabled.
Double-clicking the setup.exe on the CD refused to work. I exchanged the DVD-ROM against a DVD-CDRW, and later against a CD-ROM, and it still would not work.
Long hunting on the web finally came up with the solution:
it was the Kerio firewall on that T23, that prevented wowexec to run, and inherently the 16-bit setup.exe.
This happened to ANY 16-bit program (mostly old 'trusted' install routines).
Sunbelt Kerio have updated and corrected their program (currently Version 4.5.916).
You can get wowexec.exe to run if you temporarily fully switch off an older version of Kerio, or update to their newest version.
This applies to both free and pro versions alike.

Hope someone finds this info useful.
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)
