Microsoft.NET 2.0 framework

#1 Post by murray1 » Sun May 06, 2007 8:21 pm

I was just wondering what exactly this does. I tried to find information on it but it was difficult to find anything. Do I need this on my computer, it seems like I also have older version 1.1. If I do require 2.0 do I need 1.1? I also found a thing saying that the up to date is 3.0 should I be looking for a download for this if .NET is required?

I had been using Visual Studio 2005 and am wondering if they came with that. I no longer have it installed.

Also i believe that VS7 is visual studio, is this correct? I have MDM.EXE constantly running and have found out that it is used in debugging for microsoft, it is in VS7 folder. From what I have found it also seem that I may delete this too if that is what it is used for. Please correct me if I am wrong about any of this.

Ok, I just had an idea to look at when each of these things were created. I see that MDM.EXE should probably be left on because it was created in 2003, a long time before I installed visual studio, probably about when my laptop was new.

Both .NET 1.1 and 2.0 were created on October 3, 2006, I think this is around the date that this computer was rebuilt before I bought it. This date also is before visual studio so there goes that idea.

I am still wondering about what .NET does and whether I need 1.1 and 2.0, or just 2.0 or 3.0 or none at all.

.NET Framework is one of Micrsoft's worst designed products in my opinion. V1.1, V2 and V3 are all linerally independent of each other (and any half-witted doofus might noodle out in a second or two that a proper design would only need the most recent version).

There is software out there that needs different versions - that is Product A needs 1.1, Product B needs 2.0 and Product C needs 3.0. So you need all installed. Worse, I have know of one client application that needs 2.0 installed, and then fails if one particular update is not installed.

In the case of .Net Framework, Microsoft = Unintelligent. ... JDH

And somebody should win a prize for the stupidest name for a software product. I still don't understand just what in the hell .NET is supposed to mean. This name gives NO CLUE as to what the product does.

Thanks alot JD, I am guessing because I do not have 3.0 that I do not need it for what I am doing or should I be trying to find somewhere to download it?

You don't need 3.0 as none of your apps is complaining about its absence.

They were intended to be bold. Users should not have to go through such aggravation. I can understand the developers might need 3 versions running (along with 3 browsers, etc., etc.) to ensure compatability of their applications. But not users.

I hope someone from Microsoft lurks about in here and carries back the feedback. ... JDH

The Sony Vegas video editing software I have requires Net 2.0, I think it has something to do with the server capabilities of the software.

Same with the Sony Acid Pro 8 which is audio recording/editing - needs the Net 2.0; I truly haven't found anything that requires the Net 3.0 yet. Even my PDA requires the Net Mobile 2.0 for one or two things.
