warranty question

#1 Post by IYS » Mon May 07, 2007 1:32 am

I just bought a thinkpad T42 from a australian computer trader website ( I am in Australia too ).

I just checked if it has any warranty left on http://www-304.ibm.com/jct01004c/system ... nd=5000008 using the thinkpads serial number and to my amazement, turns out it does have warranty until 2009. Also i checked when the battary was first used using battary maximiser and it said 2006.

Now the person i bought it of claimed that he bought it second hand in 2005. Also the person did not give any receipt with the laptop. Now i dont know if the person is lying or the warranty information and battary maximiser are wrong. I know the battary could have been bought new and first used in 2006, but what about the warranty information. The thinkpad does seem to be in a very good condition for its age.

This is kind of starting to worry me since I dont know if the thinkpad is stolen or not, since it seems like he is lying.

Is there anyway I can check if the thinkpad is stolen or not?

Also do I actually need a receipt for the warranty?

Carefully handled machine perhaps. I won't base my assumption on this fact that he's lying.

I'm missing something here so sorry what made you think he's lying?

Call lenovo, to see if this notebook has been reported missing and ask them (if they can tell you ofcourse) who else has registered on it.

No. The warranty is not personal but on the machine only.

Well the reason I think that he is, because he said that he bought the thinkpad T42 in early 2005 second hand (had it for 2 years he said), however the warrenty and the Battary seem to show differently?

The battary shows its first use was in 2006 and the warrenty is up to 2009.

The machine could be bought on some sort of extended warranty plan or perhaps he or the previous owner upgraded it at some point.

About the battery, as you said it could've been bought later as new too.

The maximum warranty is 5 years right?

doesn't seem to mention anything about 5 years in description.

Description:
This product has a three year limited warranty and is entitled to mail-in or carry-in repair service.

Lets assume the machine was bought as new in between 2004-2005 and it came with standard 1 year warranty. Then the owner upgraded it to 3 or 4 years extended warranty and sold it to some buyer (your seller). So now the machine has warranty till 2009. Things can make sense this way, but that's only an assumption.

The best bet will be to get in touch with lenovo to find out about this issue.

if you look at the serial number sticker on the bottom of the machine, the last four digits are the year and month the unit was manufactured.

best first course.

and don't forget, your seller might be remembering incorrectly? i do not know how many times i have stated as absolute fact that something was one way, only to months later realize i was way off, and misremembering it?

good on you for being concerned, few things suck harder then having a laptop stolen.

I also have a second hand laptop (T43) which is in really great condition (produced 12.2005) the oryginal battery was only 9 cycles !! and it's warranty should be valid until 2009.
Ands I saw many used laptops in really ideal condition...

The only problem is that I need the waranty card or oryginal (first) reciept or paper proving that the laptop is legally bought.
Without one of those papers there is no warranty.
That is what told me IBM in Poland (even if it's a T series with international warranty).

As it was already said:
The battery could be replaced....
The laptop could have extended warranty...
Check the manufacturing date on the sticker...

Well the last 4 numbers are 06/03, so i guess its made in 2003.

Well hopefully it isnt stolen and it would be even better if I can still use the warrenty.

I think James may have meant year then month, not month then year.

No, it was made in 2006.

06=Year
03=Month.
