T23 freezes up

#1 Post by Andersonjoe711 » Mon May 07, 2007 2:08 am

O.K., so my girlfriend's T23 runs perfectly fine when there is nothing in the Ultrabay2000 slot. When I insert a drive, it runs fine for a minute or so, and then the screen freezes. I still have a picture, and I'm still able to eject the drive, but it just freezes. I've taken it apart and examined everything I possibly can. I have put a new hard drive in there, and installed using the t23 recovery disks.

This kinda has me confused..... :help:

This doesn't happen to be a CD-RW drive causing it to freeze is it?

Nope, I tried a normal Cd-ROM, and a CD-RW, and got the same freezeup as soon as i put it in.

Now it freezes up without any drives in, and when i try to start it back up I just get a black screen. the fan turns on, and the hard drive turns on, but nothing else

ARRRGH!!!!!! :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

when i remove the hard drive, and hit the keyboard forcibly, and then replace the hard drive, it turns back on..... and no, it wont turn back on if I just remove the hard drive and replace it. :help:

I'm running windows update because it told me to....

Is the fan pulsing or is it steady?

it's a steady fan. Judging by what is on this forum i wish it was pulsing, cause there's soooo much troubleshooting info.

I'll take it apart after breakfast. Shoud I replace the thermal grease after i reseat it James? I don't have any, but you guys highly reccommend Artic silver. where could I get some of that?

O.K., I swapped out the 1GB memory from my T23, and I put her 512 into mine. started both up, and removed and replaced both ultrabay drives. nothing happened. I then swapped the memory back , and did the same, and ran both for half an hour. Nothing. :D :bouncing-bird:

Thank you very much James! reseating the memory seems to have worked, although i will be getting some of that artic silver.

T23 Freezing

#10 Post by Andersonjoe711 » Mon Feb 04, 2008 2:26 pm

A Followup, I had it diagnosed free at a local Computer Shop, and was told that it is overheating, and that is why it freezes. I haven't put the artic silver on yet (I know, it's been a while) but I'm going to try it soon.

Don't run it again until you have put the paste in!
Whatever was there is no longer functional!

I agree with RBS...don't run it until you add the AC. It can keep overheating and kill the CPU, and possibly the board.

Have you actually checked the fan and the area around the fan. Years of accumulated dust could be blocking the airflow or building up on the fan blades.

Well, I replaced the grease, and turned it back on. Just going through the bios settigns, and not changing anything, it froze up. plus it won't turn back on for at least half an hour, and won't even show that the battery is charging or power is connecting. If i disconnect, and wait, then plug it back in, in a few minutes the green light turns back on. This thing keeps throwing suckerpunches, and I'm the sucker.........

I think you have either the main DC coil decoupling or one (or both) of the inductor coils. Any chance of taking the system board out and checking them by gently using a finger to lift them. It won't take much effort to budge one and you'll know if it's disconnected from the system board because it won't feel solidly mounted.

The main DC coil for the system is on the top of the mainboard and in the upper left hand corner. They use either red or orange lacquer on the windings and it's the only one of it's kind anywhere.

Just the fact that the battery indicator isn't lighting is a dead giveaway that one or all three are conspiring against you and the system freezing is the other.

Try my patent-pending, trademarked, "Torque Assisted Boot procedure":

http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.ph ... 956#274956
http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.ph ... 898#341898

Sounds like you may have a hairline crack somewhere on the motherboard. Could be the coils as phool has mentioned while I was busy searching the archives for the those two posts. The one problem I found was on a crystal as mentioned further on in the second thread I've posted above.

On second thought........I don't want to make it any worse, and my "work station" consists of my desk, and an antistatic thing I stole from my dad. I'm not a good solderer either...my hands are very shaky. Now it's time to evaluate m options, and if it's even worth spending more money on. Time to talk to "the boss" about it, and see if she still even wants it.
