R60 Memory - Lenovo vs. 3rd Party RAM
R60 Memory - Lenovo vs. 3rd Party RAM
I'm thinking of upgrading memory from 1GB to 2GB. I have the 1GB stick (Original IBM SDRAM) in one slot, and the other slot is empty.
I need a 1 GB stick of 200 pin DDR2 - 667 - (PC5300).
Lenovo wants $100 US for this, and I can purchase the same spec. (but manufactured by Crucial) online for $35 US (after rebate) from a reputable vendor with a trusted RM policy.
Question: Is there a good reason why I should avoid the lower cost option?
Thanks

I don't think there really is a reason not to buy a different brand.
If I understand correctly, it doesn't even endanger your warranty, and you can replace it yourself. This isn't always true with other notebook manufacturers.
I just installed a second 1GB RAM in my R60 on Friday.
Its a Kingston PC2-5300/667Mhz 200 pin SODIMM with a 5 year warranty.
I bought it for about 55USD.
I also went to Lenovo product support before buying it, had support detect my system > product information > ThinkPad R60 overview > Memory and got this information:
• PC2-5300 Non-Parity (NP) Double Data Rate Two (DDR2) Technology
The use of 667 MHz SO DIMM memory is recommended for this system.
• 256 MB, 512 MB, or 1 GB standard memory
• Supports maximum memory up to 3GB
Recommended for memory expansion are 2 GB PC2-4200 DDR2 SDRAM 533 MHz SO DIMM or 256MB, 512MB, and 1GB PC2-5300 DDR2 SDRAM 667 MHz SO DIMM.

Running with 2x1 gig sticks of Crucial RAM in my Thinkpad R40, I see no reason to pay extra for the IBM re-branded stick...

Same here. I went to a local store where they put in a "standard" 1GB stick half the price I would pay from Lenovo and it has worked fine since then.

I have 1 Gig Lenovo and 1 Gig Crucial rendition.
It now plays UT2004 at the highest detail on my 1024x768 screen, but after a little while of playing the laptop will freeze. I believe its directly related to ram heating issues.
I guess the R60 ram bay doesn't have sufficient cooling that the additional Crucial stick needs.
Be wary of heating issues, also anyone else have this happen/have a solution?
