X20 extend memory >384Mb?

#1 Post by linmias » Wed Oct 06, 2004 4:27 pm

Hi!
Is there a way to upgrade the memory on a X20 to more than 384Mb? What is the reason for this "limitation"? Bios? or?

/Michael

I took my X20 2662 to IBM and they installed the maximum (according to them due to physical limitations), 320MB RAM. Do you mean to say you currently have 384MB RAM in an X20? What model type do you have?

My max memory is 320Mb on the X20.... I dont know where I got 384Mb from... Anyway, what computer part defines this memory limitation? Bios?

The computer part is the notebooks body, not the BIOS (hardware not software).

Detach the base if you have one, flip the notebook over and you'll see a single screw holding a flat rectangle cover sort of positioned under the keys F4, F10, K & S. Remove the cover and you'll see it's only physically able to handle enough chips to make up 320MB.

It seems to me it is possible to add more memory but not until those same sized chips are made available with more memory squeezed in if you know what I mean.

Chipset (Intel 440BX) and number of memory slots (only one).

The 600E, 600X and most 600's use the 440BX. They all have some memory built-in, and two slots for a total of three banks of memory. The X20 uses the 440ZXM, which seems to be a close relative.

The 440BX supports four banks total of up to 256MB each.

Now, you^H^H^H some lunatic may be able to remove the soldered-in memory and replace it with 256MB, then you could get up to 512MB.

I think Bruce said people are practically giving away X20 system boards on eBay... anyone up for it?
