New Here! Need Urgent help, going insane :(

#1 Post by sl4vik » Tue May 08, 2007 4:09 am

Alright guys, I have done tons of searching through this forum...

My problem is not the CPU fan noise, its the noise on the lower right palm rest. The HDD I am assuming.

Its a Fujitsu 60GB, and I've noticed that what it does is sometimes go completely silent, but instantly will "power-up" if I open start or anything. The funny thing is, I had this lappy for 2 weeks now and I could swear this did not happen before..

I am going up a wall on this noise though. I have done Smart checks and the drive is perfect. It stays at about 31 C. I tried to do the Firmware upgrade, but apparently mine is already current. I have also tried the NHC and using the noise reduction, but it doesn't do anything.

The sound that is coming from the HDD is like a fan sound, not clicking or anything, just a whirring. Occasionally, it powers off, then IMMEDIATELY powers on. This is getting very annoying in lecture which is why I really need to solve this problem.

I'm thinking maybe somekind of service is causing the HDD to read all the time??

Thanks for anything you can give.

Oh, forgot to mention, its a T42 and warranty ran out 4 days ago :(

Aren't those hard disks clever!
They wait until your warranty expires, THEN give you grieve!
Seriously though, It could be as simple as removing/reinserting your HD to overcome a slightly corroded connection.
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)

Well, nothing I do is fixing it so I ordered a new Samsung 80GB for 50 on Newegg.

It got perfect reviews and everyone said it was quite, so hopefully this problem will be fixed.

I don't want to rain on your parade, but I've got a Samsung 80GB (MP0804H) drive that does exactly what you describe--constant whirring sound . . . I'd love to quiet it down, but I don't have a clue how. So I'm just enduring it  Good luck with yours.

If that's the case, call IBM/Lenovo. They should replace it, as "it's been doing that for several weeks now, but it's just started getting really bad".

Thats not the one I ordered.

This is the one, 5 stars on Newegg. It says silentseek and other crap that makes me think it should be quiet.

One more thing, when I reinstall XP I don't have to do anything special right?
