Msconfig..??
Msconfig..??
After making changes to startup using msconfig I'm prompted to restart as usual but after restart I get a message.....
you have used the system config utility to make changes to the way windows starts.
the sys config utility is in diagnostic or selective startup mode, causing this message to display.
choose normal starup mode to start windows normally and undo the changes made.
At this point I can only select ok at which time the config utility is displayed. My previous changes to startup are there as long as "selective startup" is checked. If I select "Normal startup" my changes are ignored. I can't get my changes to stay.
I'm using XP.
Anyone see this before.

You can remove this message:
1- Click on Start/Run, type in regedit and click OK
2- Search for following address:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

THANK YOU! I have not been able to find the registry hack that turns off that annoying message everytime I change something in the startup.RealBlackStuff wrote:You can remove this message:

There should be the opportunity on that first screen tell the selective startup mode to go to hell and to not show that screen again.murphyjp wrote:After making changes to startup using msconfig I'm prompted to restart as usual but after restart I get a message.....

I always get that warning box when I use MSCONFIG to turn off all the bloatware startup programs that would otherwise cause bootup to take 5 minutes. Well more than half of what would boot up at startup has been turned off on my machines.
And each time you use MSCONFIG you will get that warning. Just tell it to go away, and all will be fine, unless for some reason you really needed that program to boot up at start up. The key is that you don't turn off any programs at startup that you don't know aren't necessary.

Windows has a very short-term memory.dsigma6 wrote:Pretty much, but Windows is known for not saving settings.kulivontot wrote:Isn't there a check box that says "do not remind me on startup again?"

That message shouldn't even be there. Whether I click it or not (which I always do), it'll surely come up the next time a change is made in msconfig.
I think the regedit posted by RealBlackStuff is the way to go. I'll try it too.

It is true that the msconfig error message comes up each time you make a change, but unless you are constantly changing your MSCONFIG you will only have to deal with it on occasion, such as after you load a bunch of new software programs or do major updates. The problem with all that start up junk is the shear weight of it; one or two here or there are not generally going to cause a lot of problems.dsigma6 wrote:That message shouldn't even be there. I edit my MSCONFIG startup file every couple of months, generally not more often than that, and when I do, I remove everything except essentials.
There *may* be a benefit to that "selective startup mode" in that if a change were to render the system unstable, presumably it would still work. Without it (and I'm speculating here) you might end up having to resort to safe mode, which is a real PITA unless you really need it.

It's not like it drives me up the wall or anything (having to click every time), but it just shouldn't keep appearing.
The biggest thing is if I made a change and shut down, and then my fiance gets on there and says "OMG WTH do I do??"...And I'm not around. It doesn't matter either way whether you click to not notify you again, or if you X it out...but she wouldn't know that, just like most folks not familiar with that stuff.
