counterfit Ultrabay 2000 DVD/RW *pic*

#1 Post by Andersonjoe711 » Tue May 08, 2007 12:24 pm

I bought a dvd/rw from This ebay guy and nowhere did it say it was a replacement drive, or that it wasn't an actual IBM drive. I can clearly see underneath the label a second label, it is different than the one in the picture, and the fru part number sticker is peeling off, and it isn't even the right part number!

here's a good pic of the drive i got: Image

it also doesn't have a IV in the bottom right of the drive like the one on his page.

on a side note, does the IV have any significance in function or performance?

what can/should i do? it was a bit of money, and i didn't get what i was led to believe I was getting.

The IBM FRU 27L4359 appears to be a CDRW/DVD (writable CD, read-only DVD) combo drive. By the description of the eBay auction, this is not the drive being advertised. However, that said, what does the drive identify itself as when you boot Windows XP? From looking at the original label (what can be seen) underneath the IBM label, if the drive is an UJ-840, then it IS an 8X DVD writer.

The "IV", I believe, refers to the generation of writable optical drive that was marketed by IBM.

(edit: Corrected typo of UJ-840)

The drive reads as a uj-831s and it comes up as a DVD burner

Then I would say that for some reason the drive has the wrong IBM FRU label on it. The specs that I can find online for the UJ-831 says that it's an 8X DVD writer. The main problem is that Panasonic does not support these drives and refers you to the PC maker for driver updates and/or support:

well, panasonic makes drives for ibm don't they?

does a typical IBM DVD-RW drive look like that though? a label on top of a label? I just figured that it would look more stock like my CD-Rw drive. Image

And his post also does not say aftermarket, nor does it explain that it is not an IBM original drive. His page simply contains bad grammer, which could be interpreted in many ways. He is leading his "customers" to believe that they're actual IBM drives. Look at the title. It says IBM 8x DVD±RW DVDRW ThinkPad T20 T21 T22 T23 X UltraBay

Does it say anyhting to the fact that it is not an IBM drive? No, it does not. If he doesn't respond to my messages, I'm gonna report him, and file an item not as described form. I'm very mad right now. :flame:

I bought one of these drives and didn't realise as well...

I can only get DVD's to burn at 2x on 16x media.

If you want to take any eBay action, better hurry up, you only got 30 days I think!

I'm just gonna cut my losses, I can still burn DVDs, just not as fast as I would like...

Plus, I'm in Australia, so it's not really worth paying the postage to send the unit back.

I bought a dvd burner off ebay, the supplier is in NJ next town over from where I stay down there. Put it in my T30 and it works like a charm. Still have the cdrw/dvd reader in the smart bay holder that came with the refrub T30 if anybody needs one.
I alway try to go that extra mile at work, problem is the boss always finds me and brings me back

FINALLY RESOLVED!

#13 Post by Andersonjoe711 » Sat May 26, 2007 10:18 pm

well, after a few weeks of hoop jumping, I worked something out through squaretrade. I told them that if he didn't take his counterfiet drive back, I get my money back through our good court system. They quickly responded with an apology and an offer of a refund.

Some times it just takes a little friendly persuasion with a virtual sledgehammer. :thumbs-UP:
