Custom Restore on a T42

#1 Post by dr_st » Tue May 08, 2007 1:53 pm

I know that the new version of the Rescue&Recovery software, that's used on the T60 models allows one to do a "custom restore" when restoring factory contents, thus not installing most of the crapware, instead of having to uninstall it later.

Is there such an option for a T42?

The latest R&R is not officially supported on T42. I have heard some people say it works fine, and others say it doesn't work. I have not been willing to try.

Suppose I was going to try, how would I go about it? Simply download it and run it? Would it install itself onto the hidden partition?

I didn't try. My plan was to clone my disk (with R&R 3) and play with the new disk, so I hope someone with real experience posts.

So which version of R&R I have to use? And where is this feature located?

I used version 3. I actually used 3 HDs. I backed up my original drive to a USB drive and restored to a 3rd disk to be sure it worked. One problem is that R&R 3 is a big download (about 450MB)

I downloaded and installed version 3. Then when I used the Access IBM button during startup, the recovery environment looked different, but I still didn't find the option to do a custom install.

What am I missing?

When the option is there, and I believe it is in version 3, it comes after you have accepted the "licence" / "terms and conditions".
I see possibly one problem, your note book wasn't v.3 and I'm not sure that it will be available when v.3 is installed afterwards. :?:
If no one can say for sure, I'll try it out on a T41 and let you know, that's assuming I can find where to download v.3 - v.4 seems to be on offer at the moment which doesn't support T41/42. OR it may be possible I can copy it from another ThinkPad.
