X23 CPU usage
X23 CPU usage
My Thinkpad X23 (866 mhz, 640 Ram) is running Windows 2000 Professional. Lately, it has been acting somewhat strangely. When I close out my internet connection (Dial-up), the CPU usage goes to 100%. Windows Task Manager shows the csrss.exe is taking up 99% of CPU resouces. The only way to get it to drop, is to reboot the computer. It is fine again until I've connected to the internet, and close out the connection.
I connected to the internet via WIFI, and didn't have this problem. It only happens when I close out a dial-up connection.
I am wondering if heat may be playing a role in this, since I never hear the fan running (It's supposed to have a fan, isn't it?).
Is this a problen with hardware, or with software? Any ideas will be appreciated.

Definitely software.
Maybe this will help?

Just out of curiosity, why are you running Windows 2000 instead of XP?

Re: X23 CPU usage
Ofcourse it has a fan. Just in case, note down the system temperature when it hapens again. Here (right click and save target as) is a small temperature measuring tool for doing that.DPHMIN wrote:I am wondering if heat may be playing a role in this, since I never hear the fan running (It's supposed to have a fan, isn't it?).

Subliming,
Thanks for the link. After I posted my question yesterday, my x23 has started to act normal again (so far today, at least).
I am using Windows 2000 because that is what was installed on this computer when I bought it, and I see no reason to invest $200 or more to buy XP when 2000 is still doing all I need.
Ryengineer,
I downloaded the program you indicated. How do I execute it?
Thanks,
Dave

Extract it via programs like Winrar or Winzip. Then double click on mobmeter.DPHMIN wrote:Ryengineer,

What is the acceptable temperature range for my processor? Mobmeter is showing 49.0c for the processor and 44.0c for the hdd.
I have not had any further problems with csrss.exe hogging all of the resources in the past several days. Hopefully it healed itself.

The temperatures you mentioned are quite normal. It varies merely depending on how demanding a software can get and hardware configuration of the machine. Most of my systems reach 65-68 C on heavy software like Autocad 2007 and I find it quite usual too.
