Boot Sequence -- doesn't find CDRW/DVD

#1 Post by clickpoint » Wed May 09, 2007 8:28 pm

OK.. working on putting together T20
Adding new memory solved "3-3-1" beep error.
Still looking for LCD
However, was able to get to BIOS, and tried to boot from ultrabay cdrw/dvd with LINUX.
Kept getting HARDDRIVE NOT FOUND error (of course, since I don't have one yet)..... but does not seem to find the optical disk and boot from there. What am I doing wrong?

Thanks!

You possibly did not save the boot order to the CMOS. You can select a temporary boot device by pressing F12 when the computer shows the IBM logo. Select CD drive as boot device.
I have finally rejoined the dark side.

Tried that, it still only says "No harddrive" and doesn't load anything from CD

That is odd. I have been able to boot thinkpads without a hard drive installed to a live linux disk. Sorry, I can not offer anymore help. Must be something with the BIOS.

That leaves the possibility that the optical drive is defective. Can you try another drive or that drive in another Ultrabay?

Perhaps the CMOS-battery needs to be replaced.
But if you can boot from a Linux CD, you should also be able to boot from any other bootable CD!
Go into BIOS and set the booting sequence in there, rather than try F12.

I did try that first, and still would not boot ... could it be the BIOS?

Ah, but does a different optical drive give you the same problem in your system? Could be a problem within the Ultrabay or the IDE controller on the motherboard.

Don't have another one to try it with yet... the one I'm using was from my R40..

Do you have a floppy disk drive for the system? If so, then you can download the diskette version of PC Doctor for the T2x and run some tests.

Unfortunately, NO... I do have a USB floppy drive ; does the T20 have ability to boot from that?

I don't think so. I have a T21, a sometimes working T22 and many T23s. I know that you can configure the T23 BIOS to boot from a "removable device", generally an Ultrabay or port replicator-connected floppy. I'm not sure if it will accept/recognize a USB floppy. As I don't have one (USB floppy), I can't see if it will work or not. Hmm... maybe it's time to troll eBay and look for one :) .

I tried playing around with it some more last night ; couldn't get it to boot..... however, I noticed that I COULD NOT save my changes to bios! I moved CDROM to the top of the list for boot sequence, I then SAVED and EXITED. When bios came back up again, the boot sequence was unchanged..... What could be causing this? Could this be the cause of problems?

Have you tried (re-)flashing the BIOS? Is there a user-password on the BIOS that stops you from modifying?

I don't believe there is a password ... if there was, wouldn't it ask me for it??? Have not tried reflashing bios yet... still waiting for more parts

I have seen this behavior with my T23s and I'm pretty sure that it has happened when the Ultrabay slot is NOT occupied with any device. This may be saying that your system is not recognizing the CDROM or DVD drive in the Ultrabay. I haven't taken the time to see if it's related to any particular level of BIOS firmware. I've assumed that it is working normally (i.e., if no device is present, it goes toward the bottom of the boot list).

I have the EXACT same issue with a T22. If you learn how to solve this problem, please post it here. I ws just about to start a thread for this.
