Fastest Notebook HD is coming!!! Hitachi 7K200
is there any reason Hitachi is making a Serial ATA 1.5 Gb/s version in addition to a Serial ATA II 3.0 Gb/s version?
my Seagate 7200.2 had a jumper which I removed in order to enable the 3.0 speed (not that my T60 can use it but I figured why not).
would the Serial ATA II 3.0 version be compatible with a T6x?
I just paid $120 for a 120GB 7200.2 and I can't figure out if it would be worthwhile making the jump.
Edit: this thread discusses the jumper on the 7200.2

How would I tell which version I have? I would suspect its the 1.5gb/sec version?

I think my brain is fried, but I've come up with two contradictory ways to measure how much faster the 7K200 is than the 7K100. Let's pretend that the 7K200 can read 1000mb in 15 secs and the 7K100 can read 1000mb in 20 secs.
The 7K200 reads 67mb/sec vs the 7K100's 50 mb/sec so its 33% faster, right? But the 7K200 takes 15 secs to read those 1000mb vs 20 secs for the 7K100, so it takes 75% of the time so its 25% faster, right?
I get this table:

Speed is normally measured by a rate at which something is accomplished, whether it's mph, km/h, m/s, rpm or Mb/s -- not the length of time it takes to cover a given number of miles, km, metres, revolutions or megabytes.

OK that makes sense. In my quoted post below, the percentage improvements were based on time to accomplish. If we look at the rate (logins per second) instead, the figures revise upwards to:tomh009 wrote:Speed is normally measured by a rate at which something is accomplished, whether it's mph, km/h, m/s, rpm or Mb/s -- not the length of time it takes to cover a given number of miles, km, metres, revolutions or megabytes.

Given that the 7K200 has an 876 Mb/s throughput from the disk media, 1.5 Gb/s vs 3 Gb/s for the disk interface really isn't going to have an impact here (the 3 Gb/s mainly comes into play in RAID arrays, not laptops, and maybe in the future on 15K rpm SATA drives).
The only difference is that the 3 Gb/s interface can empty the 7K200's internal 16 MB buffer in 5 ms rather than 10 ms.

Ordered one
I just ordered a 7K200 over the weekend.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6822145160
They are out of stock now.
My original 100GB@7200 just crashed. Lenovo sent the replacement at no charge, but when I saw the 7K200 was available I had to jump.
One note: Acronis is awesome. It truly saved my butt. I had one bad sector that was preventing boot. I popped my Acronis disk into the DVD drive and booted. It recognized my USB external drive, and faithfully copied everything off the burnt drive except the 5 or so files that were affected by the bad sector.

Not quite. Sandisk rates their SSD at 44 MB/s, while Samsung claims 56 MB/s read performance. Both are still lower than the 7K200 real-world performance above.
Not to mention that a 32 GB SSD costs about $20 per GB today, compared to $1 per GB for the 7K200. That will change but we're not there yet ...

Does it make it fastest HDD for LAPTOPS?
Question to experts.
1. Can I stick such drive into my laptop?
2. Can it be faster then Hitachi 7K200?
3. Would it make sense upgrading to any of mentioned above on T42p (real speed difference in older laptops)?
Really interested in your oppinions.

Looks like an interesting product for blade servers at this point:
http://www.seagate.com/docs/pdf/datashe ... _10k_2.pdf
It's ~15mm high, which means it won't fit in notebooks.
Still, it'll be interesting to see if 10KRPM drives for notebooks come out.

The drive is too tall to fit into the T42p drive bay, as I noted above. Also, I suspect the T42p doesn't use SATA for the drive interface, meaning that even if it fit, it would not connect to the system.nofuture wrote:But there is still question in the air - Would it make sense upgrading T42p with new Hitachi 7K200 ?
But you may wish to ask in the T4x forum or look up the information on IBM/Lenovo's site.

It's a SAS (Serial-Attached SCSI) drive not a SATA one. You won't be able to connect it into any "normal" notebook.nofuture wrote:Seagate / Savvio 10K.2 / 73GB / 10K / 16MB / SAS / 2.5" Mobile / Hard Drive

1) SSD drives are STILL not as fast as this drive (67MBs sustained vs. 56MB in the BEST SSD drive)
2) Cost. Do you have $500 for a 64GB SSD drive (which, btw, isn't even on the market yet for SATA interfaces)?

sorry guys, not right. SSD is faster, of course, and they will even get more faster coz the technology is not at all at their endpoint.
for example PQI anounced one with 256 GB, 2.5" with 60mb/s write....
from bitmicro there is one 2,5" with 100mb/s read/write...
and the best: quiter, lesser power consumption, lesser errorrates, harder temperature circumstances...
also prices will fall...

There have been SSD drives that have been "announced" for 6 months and we have YET to see a SINGLE SATA SSD drive.
You simply CANNOT GO OUT AND BUY THESE. PERIOD. Therefore you cannot get better laptop HDD performance than the 7K200. Zilch. That's the best that can be had at the time of this posting.
Is SSD the wave of the future? Absolutely.
Will it happen before, 2009? Hell no. They are too bloody expensive.

This version of Diskeeper is nice, it monitors which files are accessed most and moves them to the beginning of the disk where its faster.

Hitachi 7K200 in at Cost Central
Folks,
Just a quick update. Cost Central http://www.costcentral.com/proddetail/H ... 40/N05405/ has the 7K200 in, currently priced at $222.19. PC Connection has them also at $245.40.
Please don't be offended you Newegg fans, but I tried to place an order with Newegg using a U.S. credit card, drawn on a U.S. bank, shipping to a U.S. address and they flagged it apparently because the IP for my order was outside the U.S. I called them and spoke with a rep who promised to authorize the order. What happened? My account was closed and the order canceled. Actually, it worked out better for me as I saved 13% ordering from Cost Central. Frankly though I won't be ordering from Newegg again.
If the 7K200 is out of stock when you see this, Cost Central has a notification function that will email you when they are back in stock and it does work. They don't always have everything I need, but when they do the price is usually better than most other places. I don't work for Cost Central or have stock in it, just trying to pass on my experience with them.
all the best,

Re: Hitachi 7K200 in at Cost Central
A couple of years ago I placed a $100 order from Newegg using a Bank of America Visa card. I got an e-mail from Newegg saying the charge was declined. I used my Visa for other purchases and it was declined for everything. I called the bank and they said they stopped the account because I shopped at Newegg.DenTP4rm wrote:Please don't be offended you Newegg fans, but I tried to place an order with Newegg using a U.S. credit card, drawn on a U.S. bank, shipping to a U.S. address and they flagged it apparently because the IP for my order was outside the U.S.
The order was domestic, my billing and shipping address are slightly different (PO Box vs street address) but so what.
Since then I have shopped at Newegg with that account without incident.

Hey DavidNY
I've had a glitch here or there with merchants and I think I'm pretty forgiving. I did call Newegg up and try to get it worked out. My shipping and billing addresses are different but the credit card has my shipping address which I confirmed. Also, the UPS label address checked out. I guess what really ticked me off was when they said they would authorize it and then just flat closed the account.
I know a number of Forum users like me are located outside the U.S. If we place an order with them it's gonna be over a foreign IP. But, if the card, the bank, the billing and shipping addresses are all within the U.S. and all verified I just think what more can you ask?
Anyway, like I said, I've had real good service from Cost Central, also PC Connection though their prices usually aren't as good. In the end I got a better deal at Cost Central.

Hi guys,
I was wondering if Hitachi has released a smaller capacity 7k200, err, rather a 7k100MkII if you will. I'd like to get a HD with the improvements that the 7k200 has (quieter, cooler, uses less power, higher cache, and better performance) but on a smaller capacity disk. Has there been any upgrades to the other models in the travelstar lineup, or is the 200Gb capacity drive the only one with these new features?
PS - Has anyone received theirs yet? Is it actually quieter (and cooler)?
Thanks

How do you know what the other ones are called? It would appear that they'd be named in the same pattern as the 7k200, ie: 7k100 - but that name is already taken by the older model. Or is it that if you see a 7k100 with 16mb cache you can assume its the new one with all of the other improvements?
Thanks.
