FYI Portable DVD+-RW NO External Power needed.

#1 Post by ipXpert » Thu Oct 07, 2004 4:19 pm

I just received a LaCie DVD RW 8x4x8 and it works with my X40 without an external power supply.

1) Super thin
2) No Power supply needed
3) Less than $250.00 (i payed 230.00)
4) Looks good with the X40
5) Fast
6) Easy to use and set up.

Where did you buy it? Direct from Lacie? Or some other vendor?

I am interested and would appreciate it if you could point me to the vendor's url.

I don't believe there's a battery, the power is supplied via the USB.

I meant what's the battery life of the laptop when you use this not connected to the power?

I have no idea but I wouldn't recommend burning DVDs while running on batteries and if you keep the notebook plugged into an outlet it should have no effect on the batteries at all.

So, this unit is designed to use the X40's powered USB2 port???
Or any USB2 port???

The specs say it comes with a "USB power sharing cable" and a power cable. Does the "power sharing cable" use the powered port, or a PS/2 or other connector??

Is this is the LaCie 8x USB Slim DVD±RW Double Layer drive??
If so, it is $229 direct from LaCie.

I do believe the dependency lies on the device being attached to the USB port (1.1 and/or 2.0) on any system, not the port itself.

Meaning to say if the attached device is designed to obtain power via USB, it will.

Are you able to burn DVDs using 2 USB cables? The IBM DVD writer allows you to read DVDs using 2 USB cables, but to burn DVDs, you have to attach the power brick. Am tempted to replace my $130 Liteon, but will wait for prices to fall first. $250 is still quite a lot for a DVD writer.

I burned 3 dvds in a row without the power supply. There are two usb cables that have to be attached at one time if you are not using the ps.

Last question, what was the maximum speed you burned at? was it 4X or 8X?

Thanks. Looks like it is pretty new because I can't find an online price at either pricegrabber.com or newegg.com. Also, the Lacie website talks about a slim dvd writer, which does double layer. Is this the one? Looks like it burns +RW at 4x and +R at 8x. Is this correct?

That is correct.
That is the drive.
Also burns -R at 8x.

Just what I was looking for, can you boot from it as well to restor an image for an example?

I notice they also have a firewire version, http://www.lacie.com/products/product.htm?pid=10306, not sure whether you can boot from firewire though ? (currently looking into getting an X31)

Yes is the answer to both your questions. The only shortcoming is that the drive comes with Roxio EZ media creator a glorious piece of bloat that I have not even bothered to install.

Thanks, I can live with the bloatware...by tossing it ;-)
This is probably a stupid question I can answer when trying out the X31, but what's the key combination to get in the BIOS?

Thanks, I also found that F12 gave the boot menu and you can also get to the BIOS from there ;-)
