Typical CPU/GPU when playing in hot climate

#1 Post by agarza » Fri May 11, 2007 3:05 pm

I'm getting quite high CPU/GPU readings in these days, ambient temp outside is about 30C or more, my room is about 25-29C (I can't tell exactly) but I need to keep my ceiling fan in high speed.

I'm asking to T41p/T42p or even T43p users that post their Thinkpad temperatures in this time of year when playing a quite modern 3D game. I use NFS: Porsche Unleashed to do the testing, playing for almost 10min straight one race. I left the TPFanControl window opened when I went to the game to see the readings just after finishing the race to get the more realistic temperatures while I was in the game (I typically use Alt + Tab) to switch windows back and forth.

Anyways, more or less, my T42p temps after playing for like 9-10min a single race without pausing or anything are:

CPU 76°C (0x78)
APS 60°C (0x79)
PCM 39°C (0x7a)
GPU 91°C (0x7b)
BAT 40°C (0x7c)
BAT 34°C (0x7e)
BUS 0°C (0xc0)
PCI 0°C (0xc1)
PWR 0°C (0xc2)
--
Traditional CPU usage and it could spike to 60-62C, but at nights the fan would turn OFF (Thanks to Smart Fan settings that triggers it at 52C)

The more interesting values are the CPU & GPU. I'm thinking maybe a reapply of thermal grease would be required if those values are considered to be quite high.
Thermal Grease used: Zalman Super Thermal Grease (STG1) applied on both CPU/GPU and metal on the heatsink where it touches the cores.
CPU speed is set to Dynamic Switching (1.8Ghz-600MHz).
GPU is at defaults: Core 320MHz, Memory: 202MHz

Any suggestions. (I have also an Arctic Silver 5 tube to test)
Another observation: Fan doesn't seem to pull out excessive hot flow of air, I take this is not normal if the thermal grease is making correct interface to the heating components)

I could upload the game If you want to recreate the same testing environment I used

If you want to upload the game, I will give it a shot here in phoenix where the temp is around 35-40C. I only have a t42 so I would imagine that the temps will vary some though.

I am not sure if that game is in the public domain, but if it isn't I give it 1 or 2 more posts before a mod says something.

No wares.

I would post a test I did:. I run SuperPiMOD 32M along with Scan for Artifacts using ATITool using the default values for the GPU, and compare the idle temps with load temps (after 30min):

Idle:

Load:

Another question to ask is if having a 2nd HDD into the Ultrabay Slim bay affect in a way that heat is trapped and can't get out the tiny case the T4x Thinkpads have therefore those high temps.

Well,

I did your same 30 min test with my 1.8Ghz / 9600 T42 and got :

Did you do the test with your CPU undervolted or at stock voltage?

I ran ATI Tool for about 5 minutes. During that time my CPU shot fro 55 degrees upto 72 before I panicked and closed the program. Is it due to my 2GHz proc, not enough AS5 or am I being paranoid?

Thanks in advance.

xtr,

I did the test with the CPU undrevolted to 1.212v. GPU was at stock speed.

Temetka,

Your temps are absolutely normal. Nothing to worry about CPU temps until they reach 85-90 C, and for GPU even up to 95 C is OK. Only if you undervolt, and / or improve the thermal dissipation through better thermal compound, improved hs/GPU contact and/or dissipating through the keyboard plate or similar should you expect temps to be a lot lower...

Thanks, that is a relief. This laptop is my baby and I can't really afford to be having heat related issues.

Wow, your mod on your machine should be pretty good. Then I wonder what your CPU temp would be at load undervolting it?
