Hi
I have had A31 thinkpad for 5 years, it is a work horse, I am happy
with it and bought another A31 "ebay" for my kids, I am in the market
for another one for a family member, do I stick with A31 or venture
into another family? is A31 all what it is cracked-up to be, a good
work house, or there is a better alternative?
I am a bit worry about IBM selling to Lenovo which does not have the
years behind it. should I stick with the old IBM stuff or step out of
the box to the new, I just need a simple system, browsing, spreed
sheet, writing a letter or two, nothing fancy.
thanks
A31 or a different family?

Personal experiences with an IBM A31p and an T42
I have been using an A31p as my personal machine on a regular basis for the past 3.5 years. This machine has been extremely reliable and a pleasure to use with the 15" IPS screen.
Unfortunately, I recently encountered a HW failure (video card). It is being repaired, under my extended warranty, by IBM EzServ (Solectron) this week.
My other TP, supplied by my company is a T42, that is approxinmately 16 months old. Is was designed by IBM and build by Lenovo.
The quality of the keyboard and and materials is comparable to the IBM TP A31p.
The T42 does NOT have the (3) spindle capability of the A31p, but is is much more portable and has much better battey life.

Re: A31 or a different family?
I had owned a A31 machine and it did almost everything for me. If you're happy with it's performance then I suggest to stick with it.ekdya wrote:I just need a simple system, browsing, spreed sheet, writing a letter or two, nothing fancy. thanks
Otherwise depending on your budget, if you're willing to spend around $380-$400 (ebay auction estimate for X31) and would like to go with something more portable then I say look into X series, particularly X30 and X31.
