Replaced the mobo in my t22, and now have nothing
Ok, so Ireally did forget the BIOS password on my thinkpad T22(26474eu to be exact). I ended up resetting the CMOS and couldnt boot. So I tried to build that thinkpad keymaker. Well I wasnt too sure about soldering the wires to the mobo, so I settled on forking out 100 bucks on a used mobo on EBay
Well I got it and put it in with no problems (well I did accidently snap the keyboard bezel off, and had to pay IBM 66$ for a new one)
Now here is the problem. When I boot, the fan starts and the hard drive starts up... but the LCD stays black, it doesnt turn on at all. I dont get any beeps, and the keyboard doesnt seem to do anything. The num and caps lock lights wont light up, and the think light doesnt work either.
What could cause a problem like this? Could it be a bad mobo? Has anyone else had a problem like this?
thanks

Does it sound like Windoze is loading in the background (just no video on the screen)? You could try connecting a monitor to the VGA output.

Well I did everything you said JHEM, and still no success... and I also tried hooking it up to my monitor via the VGA out, and that didn't work either.
Could it be a bad board?
Also, I noticed that the RAM doesnt stay seated in all the way... the little arm thingys (hehe, im not sure of their name) dont seem to be working to well... but could something likethis cause all these problems?
There are no sounds at all, no beeps or nothing.
thanks for all the replies!!

Bad RAM sockets can cause the problems you're seeing.
Try installing just one stick of RAM and holding it fully seated in the socket with one finger (gently!) while you turn on the unit. Try this in both sockets.
Report back.

If none of these suggestions work from the above memebers, I am betting on a bad board. A friend purhcased a board from ebay and it was toast.gzaector wrote:Ok, so Ireally did forget the BIOS password on my thinkpad T22(26474eu to be exact). Sadly, if there was no positive response to the suggestions I gave, the next step would be to pour some coffee and grab some butter and jam, 'cuz his MB is toast!Greg Gebhardt wrote:If none of these suggestions work from the above memebers, I am betting on a bad board. I did email the company/person and got this reply
Thanks for all the help guys, these forums are great!

Would it be worth it to try reseating the CPU another time, or is the mobo toast... I think it is.hello,
Its sound like CPU is not locked good
remove heatsink, and with flat screwdriver check if screw on CPU socket is locked.
1/2 turn left is LOCK, 1/2 RIGHT is unlock.
Just very carefully, and don't force it too strong, because socket is plastic.
put heatsink at least 2 screws , before test it again.
about RAM , You just need to adjust DIMM-Holders on the socket
try this, and let me know what happen.
we test all MB one by one before shipping, so it is very very rare to not work,
Best Regards,
Milen

I would try reseating the CPU one more time, but that would be it.
Are you sure you have the correct MB? E. g., you didn't buy a T23 MB in an attempt to upgrade your system?

I do concur with James, that if reseating the CPU and RAM does not solve the problem then you might have a bum board. But here are few things worth doublechecking.
I am guessing that you brought the motherboard from this vendor on ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... :B:WN:US:1.
If yes, then you might have the wrong board for your system even though he guarantees that it will work on a T22 with a Pea3 900Mhz CPU.
Did you compare the part numbers on your old and replacement motherboards?
I was just looking at the hardware maintenance manual (HWMM) before replacing a very dead system board in a T21 (264787u) that I have and noticed that for the T22, IBM has two different boards with distinct part numbers:
1) for T22 (2647-3xx, 7xx Bxx) use P/N 26P8096
2) for T22 (all models except 2647-3xx, 7xx, Bxx) use 26P8098
If you read the eBay vendor's description, he says that the board he has is the equivalent of the second one (i.e. the correct one for your system). But do check the part number on the board you got and make sure that that is indeed the case. If not, then see if you can convince him to ship you the correct replacement. Such mistakes do occur, especially because the part numbers are so similar.
In addition, I hope that you followed IBM's advice and brought yourself a fresh kit of nylon coated screws and did not reuse the ones that were already in the system. You can order the screws from IBM or from any number of parts vendors. If you want names of the latter, then post a reply and I will pass on the links to you. The screw kit part numbers can be found in the HWMM.
As for DIMM sockets, you can gently adjust the metal clips that hold the memory module in place using a small screw driver if necessary.

Well I reseated the CPU and still no success.
Yes that is the same vendor I bought my board from.
And you are right, it doesn't have 26P8096 listed.
I must have just skimmed over it and wasn't paying attention.
So could this be the problem?
Also, is it really neccasary to reorder the screws... I knew IBM said you should, but I just thought it was to milk a little extra money out of you.
Thanks for all the help guys!

No, it's not absolutely necessary. But for longevity's sake you might want to consider it.gzaector wrote:Also, is it really neccasary to reorder the screws... I knew IBM said you should, but I just thought it was to milk a little extra money out of you.
The screws are plastic coated so that they can be properly torqued when installed and not tend to "disappear" over time.
But, that being said, I've certainly opened and closed the interior of more than my fair share of Thinkpads over the years and re-used the screws.

OK I was wrong, my mobo FRU is 26P8098.
The description on the actuion said this
Could this be the problem? Or does it look like a bad board?
Thanks for all of the help!

Also, my system (2647-4EU) it has an XGA LCD right?
Thanks!
The description on the actuion said this
So it would be compatible with my system, however on further inspection, the board that he sent me has the FRU of 12P3091... not 12P3066 like he said.IBM FRU: 12P3066 (10L1399, 12P3041, 12P3044, 26P8098, 12P3091, 12P3875)

you need to see if the two numbers are cross-referenced. I know there's a FRU look-up at www.ibm.com but not sure where exactly it is.
If the Mobo is not compatible with yours, then I would get in touch with him immediately and have him remedy the situation. Well, actually, since it isn't working anyway, I'd see if he would send you a working replacement anyway.
By the way, this site: http://www.thinkpadmedic.com/thinkpad_d ... MT20SB.htm
has that system board listed as T20 and not T22...though I'm not sure if that makes a difference or not. At the site above if you place your mouse over the picture, the compatible FRU #s are visible. They appear to be the same ones as the seller on eBay's.

I have the Hardware maintenance manual for the T20-T22 and in it it says, for the system board:
"For T22 26P8098 (All models except 2647-3xx, 7xx, Bxx)"
So, That number is in the list of FRU's you posted.
Hmmmm.
Also found this listing from http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... eName=WDVW: Compatibility List for the 3066/3091, (but no where does it have 26P8098):
12P3875 12P3041 08K3324 12P3066 12P309 08K3324 12P3381 12P3091 12P3060 12P3360 12P3430
I'm afraid I haven't been much help....the more I see listings with both numbers you mention in them I'm thinking your M.B. is dead.
Edited:
Found this...most definitive list (IBM Site)...check out #16 (system boards near the bottom): http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... IGR-4UYKLK
