T61 Order

#1 Post by nepats778 » Mon May 14, 2007 7:11 am

Hello All,

I ordered a T61 last friday. The price was unbelievable for a thinkpad especially with the EPP discount on top. Estimated ship date is 5/30. I did not get Vista, instead I choose XP professional for professional reasons. Do you think XP will imporve reported battery performance?

Also, I couldn't choose Robinson flash drive with XP. Can it be can installed later on when I upgrade to Vista late next year?

I will post a review once I receive my T61. I can't wait :)

Cheers,
SG

I think if you didn't choose the WWAN, you should be able to buy a Robinson card and install on your spare PCI-express slot. However, Lenovo may ship your laptop with 2 PCI-express slots instead of the 3 maximum capacity... It happens with a lot of X60/s.

Yeah. I didn't get the WWAN card because I can use my BB as a EVDO modem. I also chose the PC CARD & Express Card option. I haven't seen any review of Robinson with XP, so not sure if it can speed up XP like it does Vista.

Cheers!

I agree. I had expected that the T61's would cost a lot more than the T60's.

Any chance of taking it apart and taking pictures of the motherboard?

Haha! I wouldn't take it apart for a while, so probably not! I will definitely post some pictures with the review. I never had a 14.1 screen, so I am kinda of curious about it. Hopefully, it's not too bad. Have you all tried to dual boot ThinkPads with Linux? I wonder if there are any "Lenovo/IBM" specific quirks.

Cheers,
SG

Its not so much that its Vista, its more so that its Vista's aero interface. Either way, I, too, decided to stick to XP, for the same reason (and drivers). So Vista sans Aero gives about the same battery life as XP.

As far as the Robinson memory goes... the reason it isn't offered with XP is because the memory acts as a "Flash" drive (literally) for Vista's ReadyBoost; basically, what it does is, it copies parts of the paging file onto the drive for faster access. From preliminary reviews, it actually slowed down performance...
