Best Wireless Mini PCI card for X31?

#1 Post by verktyg » Fri Oct 08, 2004 1:19 am

I've been looking at the specs for X31s and X40s for several months.

IBM has TOO MANY different models and too many different prices!!! There's zero logic to the pricing on IBM laptops. Models with less or lower level features sell for more than better equipped models???

Those of you who have gone through this process will probably commiserate with me.

Enough rant...

I'm about to pop for a 2885RGU, X31, 1.6GHz, 512MB, 40GB, DVD-CDRW, 56K, GigNIC, 802.11a, b, g, Bluetooth.

Wi-Fi is the biggest reason I want a new laptop.

I've seen various messages about which is the best performing Wireless Mini PCI card for X31.

Any feedback on these cards or any other flavors? I'm most interested in reliable Wi-Fi connections in the field.

IBM Intel PRO/Wireless LAN 2100 3B Mini PCI card 31P8601

Intel PRO Wireless 2200BG Mini-PCI card 73P2801

IBM Cisco Aironet Wireless 802.11b Mini PCI card 31P8301

I have the 2885RGU with the Intel 2200BG mini-pci card and am using it to move between 3 wireless networks during any given week. Works just fine for me. A friend has an X31 (2672 family) that has the IBM a/b/g mini-pci card and he has no complaints either. He was the reason I went in for an x31.

As for the logic behind IBM pricing, its head-spinning capacity is nowhere near that of airline ticket pricing. And unlike air tickets, at least you can be sure of getting a quality product when you pay for a thinkpad t or x series machine

Tell me about it.... Car rentals are worse! I've done 34 trips in the past 12 months - over 80 flights!

Thanks for the feedback. Yesterday I had to E-mail a file to my office and couldn't connect to 2 different wireless access points. Finally had to find a place with a wired connection.
