#1 Post by ryan123 » Mon May 14, 2007 8:13 pm

When i went to lenovos online store they have the options of getting 4gb of ram on the x60s (2gbX2) but when I tried to do the crucial system scanner test it says i can only have a maximum of 2 gb.

I believe that it can only use 3gbs, however, I've been reading posts and people are suggesting that with santa rosa it will be able to use all 4gbs

Just a minor correction. The X60s will not come with Santa Rosa. X61 however...

If you are using Windows XP/Vista 32bit, the maximum windows will show is 3.25GB of RAM. Even if your system has 4GB.

I believe that X60s will allow installation of 4GB, but it will not be able to "see" more than 3GB. But correct me if I'm wrong.

If I recall right, windows xp/vista 32bit only sees 3GB (due to limitation of logical addressing) while windows xp/vista 64bit will see 4GB.
If I'm not mistaken dualcore is 32bit-only while core2duo supports both 32bit and 64bit.

From the Wikipedia article on Windows XP Professional x64 Edition: "Windows XP 32-bit is limited to a total of 4 GB, which is, by default, equally divided between Kernel and application usage. Using the /3GB switch in the boot.ini file forces Windows to limit the kernel to the upper 1GB and provides up to 3GB for applications."

The X60s has two memory slots, and allows 2GB modules (according to document MIGR-63277). This means that up to 4GB can be physically installed.

At the same time, Lenovo claims in document MIGR-55644 that the X60s only supports 2GB max.

I wonder where the memory beyond 2GB disappears, or is one of the above documents wrong?

Regards, Martin

I've got 2x 2Gb installed on my X60 and on the boot screen have 2 menu options 'with /3GB' and 'plain'. Either option shows as having only 3.0 Gb RAM (via properties page on right clicking 'My Computer') and both say 'PAE' .
Does this mean I really do have 3 Gb of RAM for my apps regardless or is it still sharing it with Windows (XP Pro SP2) ?

Me, but I can't tell the difference from 1GB to 3GB --only when I changed my 5400rpm drive to 7200rpm... but still very little performance increase. so I'm planning to remove 1GB of ram and I might switch back to the 5400RPM HDD.

Then again, I don't have any apps on my X60s. I just got it a few weeks ago.

You have 3 GB visible and available to Windows. The "Napa" chipset can only address 3 GB of memory, regardless of the OS.

Hmmm, to show how old I am...
I remember when the original XT and AT and '386' computers came out. Limited to 640K of RAM and the top memory was reserved for graphics, BIOS etc. This led to a bodged effort to access more memory (Expanded and extended).
Windows came along and helped everyone forget memory limits but oh look. Intel once again screw things up 'because no-one will ever need more than 3 Gig of RAM' - paraphrasing a well known saying!!

Surely someone should sue the pants off Intel for being complete idiots and not learning from their own historic mistakes ?
