T30 Display only shows 2/3 of screen

#1 Post by andrewk » Tue May 15, 2007 9:12 pm

Hi folks, on behalf of a client I came across this forum and was hoping
for some insight. My client has a T30 and I apologize in advance that I don't have much in the way of specifics. The problem is simple - the LCD only shows 2/3 of the screen. The right 1/3 is completely black. Everything is compressed into the viewable 2/3, it is not just simply cut off. It is not just a Windows or display properties issue, as it also occurs in the bios setup or when booting from a CD or boot disk.

I'm holding out hope that it is something simple and not a faulty display. Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Welcome to thinkpads.com!

Some things to check:

- Does the same 2/3 display also occur with an external monitor?
- Has it always been this way? In other words, did your client change something in the hardware (swap display or ribbon cable)?
- Download a copy of PC Doctor for T30 (bootable CD) and run at least the systemboard and video tests
- What is the full type number of the system? 2366-xxx or 2367-xxx

To answer your questions:

External Display shows a full screen.

I configured this laptop last week and the LCD display was normal. Client has not changed anything.

System is type 2366-FBU

Will check with PC doctor today.

Thanks for your reply,
andrewk

Have you checked the BIOS options to see if there is an option for screen expansion? I know that on some other models, the option exists, and you need to turn it on to get the full screen, but generally it would show a border all the way around, not just on one side.

Yes, I have been through the BIOS options. I have reset to defaults and also played with every possible configuration of the display options, including screen expansion, to no avail.

Is it compressed to those 2/3 just in Windows or whenever there is something on the screen? (IE: POST screen with IBM logo). If it is just within Windows, make sure the video resolution is set properly and reinstall the video driver. If it happens all the time, then I am going to guess it is something wrong with the LCD itself, the video cable to the LCD, or the cable connector on the motherboard. If it is all fine on an external monitor, them the video chip should still be fine. I would learn toward the cable as the problem then the other two.
I have finally rejoined the dark side.

2/3 shows everywhere....Windows, post, bios setup, boot disk. What I don't get is if 1/3 of the screen went bad, why does it not just chop off what it can't display. It's as if the screen knows it went bad so compresses everything so it can still be seen.

I'll have my hands on the laptop tomorrow to run PC Doctor. Stay tuned.
