large file xfers via wireless
large file xfers via wireless
if i'm xfering large files or sets of files from the thinkpad to any other machine on my LAN (or WAN for that matter) it randomly drops in the middle of the xfer and acts like there is no wireless connection available (the intel status indicator in the systray shows an X instead of green for good signal, and access connections also shows it is not connected).... however, if i leave a wifi monitoring tool (netstumber) open it shows that the wifi radio has a constant bead on the wireless signal with little or no noise. if i plug in a physical cable, i have no problems. anyone know why this might happen?
Common problem; several causes:
802.1x authentication checked in the wireless setup,
Buggy driver (what version are you using?),
defective wireless card (what card do you have?),
buggy router firmware (what router do you have?),
2.4GHz interference at your location,
etc,
etc,
Post back when you've checked some of these out.

1. No wireless authentication.. I run WPA-PSK.sktn77a wrote:Common problem; several causes:

2. 8.1.0.25
3. 2200BG (works fine otherwise)
4. Netgear WGR-614v2 (Running the newest firmware Firmware: 2.16 RC4)
5. While interference could be the problem, I doubt it b/c I only get dropped during larger file Xfers (but not all of them).
also, this happens at work too on a 3com AP, so I think we can rule out a bad router/AP and/or buggy firmware (#4).
WSA-PSK is busy changing keys every packet or so. There has to be some overhead here. Along the same line of thinking, my VPN client documentation says if you want to use 3-DES instead of DES, you need an accelerator in the VPN machine to make it go fast enough to be reasonable. I have the same issue with my wireless, so I just connect wired when I need to transfer very large files (up to 5 Gb per file, if anyone was wondering what I meant by large). ... JDHurst
Try updating the wireless driver to 8.1.0.28:

Try turning off Windows Wireless Zero Configuration(?) service or whichever service in XP auto configures the wireless connection. I had this problem before and turning this off did the trick. I think after upgrading to SP2 and updating all the drivers and IBM Access Connections, it no longer mattered whether that service was running or not (sorry, but I'm running Server 2003 now so I can't double check).
