small XP shutdown problem
small XP shutdown problem
Lately, I need to "turn off" XP twice in a row. The first time never does it. The second time always does it. I found 49 processes running before the first "turn off", and 36 processes running after it. Would studying those lists provide a clue? How does one diagnose this (unimportant) problem?

In all my XP installations I always install UPHCleanup
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/deta ... laylang=en
Makes for a very fast shutdown.

To RealBlackStuff: UPHCleanup didn't help, but I'll leave it installed.
To jdhurst: where can one see these error reports during a shut down?

I think JD manually closes the programs that needs to be closed in task manager before shut down, which is a very good practise in my opinion.dcouzin wrote:To jdhurst: where can one see these error reports during a shut down?

I'm trying a long shot here.
Are you running Sunbelt's Kerio firewall?
Have you tried to install some program(s) recently from CD/DVD that did not install properly?
Error messages involving wowexec.exe?
If so, update your Kerio firewall to version 4.5.916 (or newer, if available), reboot and try again.

Thanks all. It was Skype.
SkypePM.exe and Skype.exe are running.
With a single try at turn off, both these processes do leave the task list, but the turn off is unsuccessful. It only succeeds on the second try.
But if I manually turn off either SkypePM.exe or Skype.exe in the task manager the computer does turn off with a single try.

Holy [censored] dcouzin your a bloody genius -
skype was doing it!!! That SOB!!! - I had the exact same problem on my T60 - it was really annoying and i searched a lot about common xp shut down problems!
Time to email skype what do you think?
Is there a more stable older version or how have you fixed this? (by exiting skype before shut down?)
-thanks again man!
EDIT - skype have updated to version 3.2 - its a new version and the shutdown seems to work fine now!
