installing windows after formatting drive

#1 Post by Salamy22 » Thu May 17, 2007 5:22 pm

i'm hoping someone can help me with this problem.. i bought a T22 from someone. it ran fine for a while.. when i installed a program that i downloaded.. something happened and i couldnt start the computer again.. so i decided to format the drive.. i used fdisk to remove any partitions he had.. i have one primary dos partition on there now.. but i cant install windows.. when i try to install windows 98 SE from the cd.. it does the scandisk.. and then it stops and says this:

Standard Mode: Fault in MS-DOS Extender
EC=8BC8 CS=0053 IP=2811 AX=FFFF BX=0000 CX=FFFF DX=FFFF

SI=0277 DI=0186 BP=4278 DS=004B ES=0374 SS=004B SP=426E

Standard Mode: Bad Fault in MS-DOS Extender
Fault: 000D Stack Dump: 036C 0000 0070
Raw fault frame: EC=8BC8 IP=244B CS=0053 FL=3007 SP=00F2 SS=004B

Then i have tried to install windows xp home and pro.. and when the blue screen comes up and it starts loading stuff up.. on the white strip on the bottom of the screen it gets to:

Setup is loading files (Kernel Debugger DLL)...

at that point it stops and in the middle of the screen it says:

File setupdd.sys could not be loaded
The error code is 4 (and sometimes it is error code 7)
Setup cannot continue. Press any key to exit.

Sometimes it just stops and says in the middle of the screen:

The file pci.sys is corrupted. Press any key to continue.

And finally sometimes it just freezes when it says:

Setup is loading files (PCI Bus Driver)...
on the bottom of the screen on the white strip.

now i dont have any of the original disks.. but i cant imagine that i cant reinstall windows at all without them.. i have tried changing hard drives too.. and that didnt work.. same errors..

anyone got any ideas?

Welcome to thinkpads.com!

First suggestion... pull the modem/ethernet card out from the bottom of the system and try formatting again. If that was your original problem, then there was no need to re-format the drive :( .

Might be a virus from the software you downloaded. Try resetting BIOS to defaults, checking RAM, & booting with a McAfee rescue floppy or similar.

Maybe the drive is too big for Windows 98. Try a smaller partition and also try fdisking the disk again to ensure all partitions are truly gone. Also, with Windows 98, format first before trying to install. Windows 98 is brain-dead, and it may not know how to format by itself. I always format first. ... JDH

ok, lets recap..

not the drive..

it was running XP..

all this started after downloading a file..

so, what to do..

first, reset the bios to factory default,

then , if possible, get a different HDD,

see if you can load DOS..

checking memory would involve removing one or the other of the two memory parts..
if there are two..
if not two then you're stuck.. no easy way to test the memory..

this problem sounds like either a virus embedded someplace or bad memory or a bad hard drive..

I was just going to reply saying i just went through the same problem.
I just bought a T21.I also had bought a used low density ram chip(256 meg,16 chips). I than was getting the same message you got.Teied Win98se and XP home and pro.And got the same error's that you got.
I than put in a known good 128 meg ram and every thing went great.XP installed fine.

So it looks like i have a bad peice of 256 meg low denisty ram.
It shows up in the bios. And after i try it in a system with xp pror installed it gets about 1 min in windows and lockes up.
