Where to find T21 Parts? (ultrabay chassis)

#1 Post by -nick » Fri May 18, 2007 3:15 pm

Nothing came up on ebay. Are there any places to get original parts for these machines? Looking to replace my broken-tab ultrabay chassis.

thanks

I have a parts machine T20 here that might have the part you need. Can you tell me exactly what you need?
It might be easier to get the Hardware Maintenance Manual and reference the part in there.

Sure thing, it would be part "G". I came across this old post -

http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.ph ... trabay+tab

Which has a nice link with the tab outlined -

I would have thought that these would be more available as it sounds like a common problem?

Best Yoda voice: "Hard to find, T2x Ultrabay 2000 guide rail is. Look to the Force you must." :)

I have recently (yesterday) paid for several miscellaneous parts kits for the T22. They are supposed to still be in the factory-sealed boxes. These kits contain most of the miscellaneous parts that go into the base of the T22. In addition to the hinge cover, hard disk guide rail and CMOS battery holder, there is the Ultrabay guide rail. I believe that the Ultrabay guide rail is the same between the T22 and T21 (and the T23 I hope). I'm going to pop open several systems tonight or tomorrow and confirm that. If these rails are NOT compatible with the T23s that I have which are broken, the real reason I bought them for, then I'm going to be looking for a bunch of T22 owners  .

I don't know when I'm going to get these in my hands but I'll post something in the Marketplace when I figure out how compatible this kit is with the T21 and T23. The HMM says that the FRU is for the T22. No cost estimation at the moment as to not undermine a possible sale in progress :) .

Yay! I managed to scrounge one up. I gave IBM/Lenovo a ring first, but they only sell this part in a $100 kit now. At least I found the part number (which was no easy feat) - 46L4922

Next question, is there anything I can do to reinforce this tab, or to generally make it last longer?

46L4922 appears to be the entire base cover of a T23.

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... YYKVY.html

The Ultrabay guide rail is part "e" marked in that diagram. I have a couple of broken rails from T23 systems with 12P4224 stamped on them.

There does not seem to be any easy way of strengthening the tab as it is made of aluminum and thus fairly difficult to weld (as far as I know). About the best thing you can do to extend the life of the tab is to make sure that the LCD hinges are not too tight, as the opening and closing of the lid puts a lot of strain on the Ultrabay tab. There was another thread somewhere around here about putting a small amount of oil on the washers.

If anyone is still looking for T21 parts, I just put up a post in the marketplace forum.
