uninstall onscreen sound/brightness display

I installed the hotkey update to my vista clean install. Afterwards, the sound randomly mutes itself. I have uninstalled the hotkey update, but the problem remains and the onscreen displays remain. Is there a way to go back to my previous system where I had no onscreen display when I pushed the volume up/down key, but also didn't have the sound cutting out on me?
