32 and 64 bit Vista

#1 Post by Paul386 » Sun May 20, 2007 8:08 pm

I know that if you buy Vista in the retail market you have choose to either install the 32 or 64 bit of whatever version you purchased.

However, if you buy a 32 bit preloaded copy of Vista (a.k.a T60 / T61) can you at some point reinstall your OEM Vista as 64bit?

Thanks

I am thinking about the same issue. I replace the T2500 CPU with a T7400 in a T60P and I have read that the T7400 (core 2 duo) can run the 64 bit version.

Any clarification?

You can install a 64-bit version on a Core 2 Duo machine. However please keep this in mind.
1. To install 64-bit you have to do a clean install.
2. I dont know if Lenovo has started giving 64-bit restore DVDs, last time I checked they were not. So if you install a 64-bit version from a DVD from market you might not be able to create the recovery partition that comes with Thinkpad. Also some of the softwares like multimedia center are not available for 64-bit.

Overall switching to 64-bit system should not be a problem and things are fast.
