OS X on NEW ThinkPad T61 and T61p?

#1 Post by heyzeus123 » Mon May 21, 2007 2:16 pm

Does anyone know if OS X will run on the NEW ThinkPad T61 and T61p (Santa Rosa platform)?

Specifically, will the following graphic and wireless options work?

Graphics:
1. nVIDIA Quadro NVS 140M
2. Intel GMA X3100 GM965

Wireless:
1. Intel Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN
2. ThinkPad 11a/b/g/n Wireless LAN Mini-PCI Express Adapter

Inquiring minds want to know. :D

Good question..

I'm in the same boat trying to figure out if I can get a T61 running OS X. I love OS X but can't leave the TP hardware. Currently running a T43 with Ubuntu and its nice, but the little annoyances start adding up over time.

From the reading I've done on insanelymac, you definitely want the Intel graphics adapter and IBM (broadcom chip) WiFi adapter. Both of those SHOULD work.

Apparently there has been some luck with sleeping with the SSE3 chips, but no idea if anybody has gotten a TP working fully in that mode yet.

I'm waiting for the 4x3 15" T61's to come out with the above options (and webcam) then I'm going to get one and start hacking..

quite frankly. if the t61p doesn't come out in 4:3 i think ive made up my mind that im going to buy my first MAC book or mac book pro. ibm/lenovos done something absolutely stupidly rediculous by only offering wide screen, more than half of their professional consumers want 4:3.

note, this has taken me months to decide on, ive talked to some hard core mac guys, and they're doing a great job of getting me to convert, so is the rest of the mac community. quite frankly "Sh.T just works! the way it is and always was supposed to"... im starting to appreciate the value this total life productivity offers me. MAC to me is productivity. i stay productive in my car (ipod and accessories), bring it home into my airport wired home, and media saturated entertainment center, the whole ilife package, and video conferencing technology with fluid like relaxing gui screens. its the whole life package that im starting to really buy into with the MACs.

everyone i know who's gone to mac used to be PC guys, im talking about the original hackers, the guys who had something to do with sections and subsections in the green, yellow, and beige books . lol.

i haven't crossed the line yet, but its awfully convincing and attractive, especially as ugly getting as the new t61's are with those wide screens, and tons of plastic gap space.

I'm not sure i quite understand the reasoning - if ThinkPads are only available in widescreen, then i'm not going to buy one but get another widescreen notebook instead.

I'm a fan of OS X now and love what parallels can do but i know that without a trackpoint my productivity would decrease considerably - maybe once they are touchscreen I could like with a MAC notebook more easily.

Anyway the T61p will come out in 14" 4:3 i think, i'm gonna try OS X on a T61 WS model next week and will let you guys know how i get on.

I'm glad snife pointed this out, but I think the reasoning is "if it's going to be widescreen, it might as well be a MB/MBP". That's kind of the boat I'm in at the moment.

whats also been a big pointer to my switch over is that, im just sick and tired of windows, and hate vista.

all of my mac friends and professional collegues. just alwasy seem to have it together.. their lives are so productive. macs just work. plain and simple.

im going all out with the mac equipent. all wifi devices, computers, entertainment docks addons, tv equip, etc.

im excited !

To answer the original poster's question -- yes, OS X will run on the T61. I just finished installing it on mine, and it's running nicely (on the nvidia graphics).

I installed it on the 6GB OEM partition, and I'm dual booting it with Vista Ultimate.

I have not attempted to get networking running yet, nor have I tried any of the hacked video drivers to get Quartz Extreme and Core Image support (but I'll be trying both soon).

The Atheros-based wireless should work (my abg on a Santa Rosa-based X61 works). I don't think the Intel wireless will work though. Wired networking also does not appear to work currently.

So, between NVIDIA Quadro NVS 140M and Intel GMA X3100 GM965 which works better. That is, which one has QE/CI & OpenGL support?

installation successful?

Hi all,

I tried to install OSX on a t61 7663 using the uphuck image. However, the system didn't start up after the reboot since the Setup Assistant application crashed. :(

So, could someone please provide some hints how to get it running or what tools to use?

thx,
orca2

Ok, regarding the T61:

Jas 10.4.8 image works so far. Install and reboot worked.

However:
- No network (neither wifi nor ethernet)
- No sound
- No support for the nv 140m

Edit:
and, of course:
- No suspend
- No working nvidia driver

Any ideas?

@orca's first post

Ok, I've done this a million times with the T60 and T60p and have done alot of work toward this. First and foremost, there are no working Intel wireless drivers for OS X and there never will be. If you want to switch to an Atheros chipset, then you'll have no problem getting wireless working.

Second, what is the Ethernet chipset, as well as the sound chipset? If it is the same as the T60p, check the first post in this forum to get the sound working. As far as the NV 140m, try out natit and see if that does the trick, although you may need to edit the kexts with the correct hardware ID.

Suspend/Sleep will also never work, period, and I just wish I could get speedstep working on my T60p without it freezing every time on boot so that I'd least have something resembling power management.

Actually that is a very good question as there are more than a few versions.

I have a ThinkPad T61P Type 6459. JAS (10.4.8.) was an easy install, but the better things are in 10.4.10. I am dying for them to get Santa Rosa support, which is in 10.4.9 up so I tried Uphuck 10.4.9 1.4i r3. Didn't see my hard drive. I set the AHCI in the bios to compatibility and it worked. Installed easily. My upgrade to 10.4.10 was not easy. In digging and working (wayyyyyyyy too much time here) it appears that the Intel motherboard 965M santa rosa chipset is not in the current hackintosh builds :-( We will probably have to wait till 10.5 (Leopard) to get the goodies. So, a basic can it work install is OK. But there is no:

Wireless--Intel 4965AGN
Ethernet--Intel 825666M
Sierra Wireless mini-PCI (AT&T)--not hopeless as their is a fix for this on Linux, but first things first
Video--nVidia Quadro FX 570m (this is the G86 GPU that is next gen GeForce 8600 GT--the current MacBook Pro video cards) so it should be easy to get working, but the work has not been done

Bluetooth and firewire work. I have not messed around with sound as the graphics are the most important component to me. If I can get them going I plan on buying a compatible chipset (broadcom) mini-PCI card to replace my Intel one and simply have native Airport support. The cludgy hack for wireless support is simply not worth it.

After searching forever and trying many different things I have made some posts on osxscene.com and insanelymac.com. All posts under jharleman if you want to find them. If there is any progress let me know! I feel the pain. cheers - jl

Thanks for the replies.

I already have the JAS verision of the OS. Unfortunately, when I switched the SATA to AHCI from Compatibility, Windows won't boot anymore and instead, it flashes the BSOD. Any suggestions?

FYI, there is a SATA driver on the Uphuck 1.4i r3 install. It supports ICH8 so select it and give AHCI a shot. On the windows one, I take it that you tried switching it back and seeing what happened? OSX, JAS i n particular, can drop the darwin boot loader over your MBR so you need to boot to DVD and repair it. You will want to make sure the right partition is marked active or the Windows DVD won't see it. cheers - jl

Thanks for the suggestion. I'm now able to boot in both Windows and Mac. I'm using the darwin boot for the dual boot. =) Also, are there any video card drivers that I can use for the Mac?

Cheers!

No, Ive followed this guide (http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php? ... l=soundmax) but cant seem to find the ADS codec ID in the datasheet of AD1984. Ive just emailed Analog Solutions to get this.

Ill post here when I get somewhere.

Uphuck installs perfectly with SATA turned to compatability in the BIOS. After installing 10.4.10 update you can turn it back to on full force :-)

Guys,

I posted a brief guide. Though this is about my T61p it applies to almost all T61s and in particular any QuadroFX graphics. The link is here: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.ph ... 435#354435

Good luck! cheers - jl

As to graphics:
1. No QE/CI, only resolution change
2. Works flawlessly with both QE and CI.

About the wireless part:
1. So far it doesn't work in OS X
2. This one works as far as I know. Check the insanelymac forums for more info.
