Wow! There is no other way to express my jubilation right now in regard to the performance leap that the Hitachi 7K100 has made to my IBM ThinkPad T42. The installation was trouble free. All my programs and the internet works flawlessly. Boot times have drastically reduced (from 4 mins down to < 2 mins). I was lucky! I even got a very good price (US 107 with shipping) for the Hard Disk.

I think it is the finest Hard Disk I have used to date. It is cool, quiet, vibration and noise free (unless you are seated and working in a highly reverberant environment). I am really glad that I listened and took the advise from all the gurus in this forum.

For those of you who are still pondering, reading a ton of reviews, biting their finger and foot nails, and still undecided, I can only say, JUST GO FOR IT! You won't regret your investement.

Did you do a recovery from the CD's, clone the drive, or clean install, or?

Thank you for your kind words, Brad. I recovered from CDs.

For those of you who are very sensitive to the 'slight' noise that emanates from the 7K100, you could try the 'Hitachi Feature Tool'. I haven't tried this utility, but it might help. This has been stated by many members in this forum.

Congrats. I don't think anyone has been disappointed with this upgrade. I certainly noticed the speed boost with my T40.

And even if it's 100GB, it's a good deal only if it's new and has warranty. A brand new 100GB 7200rpm Seagate HDD with 5 years of warranty is only $115 shipped on Newegg.

I see. Then I am really surprised by the dramatic decrease in boot time. Going from 5400 to 7200 shouldn't help THAT much. The 100GB's higher density helps a little further. But the most important factor was probably the clean installation of Windows on the new drive.

Oh yes, the one I have is newly manufactured (May 2007) in Thailand and comes with a three (3) years warranty.

I do not know much about the Seagate drives except I have one (160GB) installed in my HP Pavilion desktop and it DOES make a lot of clicking noises (relatively fast though).

Hi Pianowizard,

Yes, you are right about the clean install. Boot time and Shut Down time is definitely faster including the time at the 'Welcome' screen.

By the way, I have Windows XP Professioanl SP 2 installed, and I have some big programs, such as Office 2007, Nero and PaintShop Pro Photo XI.

I am also up-to-date with the ThinkPad drivers and utilities.

I am using Office 2007 on my Dell desktop which uses Win XP Pro SP2 and don't have any issues, other than the fact that Office 2007 is slower than Office 2003.

Well, on my earlier set-up, Office 2007 was a crawl! Now, with the 7K100, Office 2007 is just as fast as Office 2003. Amazing! The trick to speed up Office is the hard disk capacity, in adddition to lots of RAM.

Enjoy the drive. Probably the faster drive it would be produced for PATA interface laptops. The 7K200 would only come out in SATA interface.

Glad to hear that you don't regret your investment.

2 minutes long boot seems relatively long.

Every machine I own boot in less than 1 minute. And they're not as fast as yours.

I'm sure you could still optimize this boot time.

- Delete every entry in MSConfig (but keep the antivirus and the firewall if you have one),
- You can use BootVis, which will optimize the launching of the every startup component. Great improvement, after BootVis use,
- You should also use the classic connection interface,
- If you're the only user of the laptop, you should use automatic login (but it's not really secure, I do not recommend this if you're concerned by the security of your data,
- Even if it's a fresh install, your drive is already fragmented. Do not hesitate to defragment it, do not forget to clean the temporary files and folders before proceeding :

If you use the windows defragmenting tool, you'll need to run it several times to defragment your disk completely (I personnally do it 3 times). You could also use a better tool, like, for example, O&O Defrag.
Deactivate pagefile.sys before defragmenting. You can defragment the pagefile, and the registry, with PageDefrag, which is a very nice program.

Those are the main tips to decrease boot time, but you can find others.

I periodically perform defragmentation. I use PerfectDisk v8.0 (build 63), and I do have pagefile.sys and hyberfil.sys files excluded during the process. I also frequently delete the temporary internet files, in addition to .bak, .tmp, .old, etc. files.

By the way, has ne1 tried the Hitachi Feature Tool? What are the recommended setting for optimum Hard disk performance?
