How to get IBM to replace my T41? **READ** PLZ

#1 Post by T41mbi » Sat Oct 09, 2004 1:33 pm

OK I got this high pitch sound from my computer I am unsure what it is but I can say for sure its definately not the following:

- The Fan
- Inverter Card
- RAM
- HDD

-------------------------

I have sent it to IBM 3 times, they have replaced the fan, the inverter card and still the sound persists at the worst times (usually in a lecture). Though its funny because when I disconnect the the powerpoint cable the sound reduces itself (dosent go away) but its much more quiet.

-----------------------

Im sick of sending to IBM and getting it back with nothing fixed, I suspect it can either be the Graphics card, microprocessor or system board (duh that about covers it all)

I want them to replace it! Any advice/experience anything you guys can share with me to help me make this happen would be appreciated.

How should I approach them about this? Should I demand!
HEY LOOK IVE BEEN GOING THROUGH THIS FOR OVER 2 MONTHS NOW, I HAVE OWNED 3 THINKPAD COMPUTERS AND I KNOW WHATS NORMAL AND WHATS NOT! I AM SICK OF BACK AND FORTH I HAVE GOT A DEFECTIVE NOTBOOK AND I WANT IT REPLACED!

Shouldn't be too difficult - they've acknowledged that the problem exist (? - what did they do to try to fix it - ?) and they have been unable to fix it after three attempts. Insist on a replacement and keep escalating it until they agree.

well.. i am in process with my T30. If i remember. I send it back to IBM 7-8 times in 2 yrs. I got 5 systemboard, 2 LCD panel(1400x1050) and keyboard...etc replaced. suddenly the ultrabay didn't recognize the battery. I send it back to IBM to get it fix. After i got it back for like 1 weeks.. my LCD go off like 10 secs. Even I try stay in Bios screen. IBM is working replacement for me.. I don't know what will come up. 1st time i send my T30 back to IBM is 2 weeks after I have it. 2nd memory slot fired. I wonder IBM spend how much money on fixing my T30.. The report(Repair and parts) of my T30 is 19 pages..

You would certainly think after all that they would have just offered to send you an entirely new notebook. My suspicion/hunch is that in fact they really should have done exactly what I suggested as there is clearly something that
"lurks within the machine" that is whacked out. My guess about the high pitched noise is bad capacitors resonating.

I think the sound is being made by your LCD inverter (or it's high frequency coil). Usually it's not that audiable, but I guess yours is. It usually happens when the screen changes brightness a lot (like moving between slides in a presentation).

Try to run the laptop UNPLUGGED from the AC adapter, and see if that helps.. If it does, then get IBM to replace your AC. I haven't seen a single ThinkPad that had NO coil noise yet, but it shouldn't be audiable enough to disturb you.

Send an email to this guy:

http://www.ibm.com/ibm/sjp/

Make sure it is well written and cordial. Explain your problem, and that you are sick of getting it "repaired" with nothing fixed, and you'd like a replacement, as this is really messing with your life and schedule.

I did this, and they finally agreed to hotswap for me, which they don't usually do. A few other people have done this with good results.

You should get a call back in less than 24 hours from someone who is very willing to work with you.

Good luck,
Plink
