Ordering, two quick questions about SXGA screens

Afternoon all,

I've decided after waiting for a while to go ahead and order an X60 now (time is a factor, didn't see much in the X61 that was worth waiting for). I think I'm going to go with the SXGA, and I was just wondering,

A) if you can turn the resolution on the SXGA down if the fonts/etc are uncomfortably small right? (just in case)

and B) I've see a fair bit of discussion on the flickering and other issues with the X60 screens and the SXGA in particular, but I don't really have a sense of how common this problem actually is? Clearly they can't all be failing, but even a 10% chance over the next couple of years is a concern. But of course if the XGA is equally incident-prone then in one sense its a non-issue for the SXGA.

You're talking about the X60 tablet, right? The regular X60 doesn't have SXGA+ (not SXGA).

Yes it's possible to reduce the resolution but in Windows XP, things look crappy. Get Vista if you plan on using non-native resolutions.

A better solution would probably be to increase your font sizes. This wouldn't make the screen look as bad as changing the resolution. I don't see what Vista really helps...the wrong resolution on an LCD always looks bad.

I've got an sXGA. First off, I'm so glad I got the high resolution screen. I can fit so much more. Secondly, the text is small, but not impossibly small. I have yet to be ina situation where I have to squint. Finally, Vista's so called improvement on running a screen at a lower resolution while mitigating the blur is perhaps overplayed. I've tried it. The screen is less blurry than a machine running XP, but it is nonetheless slightly blurry. I wouldn't choose it to run everyday, but if I need the lower resolution, it's tolerable.

I knew I would be able to increase the font size, but it's good to know that resolution switching isn't an ideal option.

And any thoughts on the problems people have been having with flickering/etc screens? Is this widespread, and equally importantly, is it as much of a problem with the XGA's? The reason I'm concerned about this is that I'll be leaving the US for quite a while just after I get this, and so any problems needing warranty fixes are sure to cause at least a minor headache.

Just decided to bite the bullet and order. Hopefully won't have any problems. Two last questions though, if anyone wouldn't mind.

1) I ordered one 1 GB stick of RAM, and am planning to get a second from newegg. But I don't need two sticks of the same brand to get it to run dual channel correct? As long as all the specs match (PC2 5300 DDR2 667 CL5 200 pin) ordering one 1 GB stick will work fine?

2) As a matter of interest, how close to the mark have recent shipping dates been for people? As I said I order the SXGA tablet and the estimated date at the moment is June 6th.

Thanks for this help, and the board in general, its been great when trying to make a final decision.

It won't run dual channel regardless.

Not wanting to hijack this thread, but the Crucial link says in the FAQs, to increase the memory visible (over the 3Gb limit) install a 64bit OS. Can you actually do that on a X60 series and get a benefit ?

No. When the new Santa Rosa machines come out, you will be able to exceed 3GB.
