Upgraded CPU on A31 Today

#1 Post by proaudioguy » Thu May 24, 2007 3:49 pm

I want to test it very thoroughly to make sure it's not DOA.
Do you have any suggested testing utilities?

So far it seems to be working. I went with a 2.2GHz, because it was less than half the price of getting a 2.4GHz. It may not be the fastest, but it's still a pretty good leap from 1.6GHz. If I could get an over sized heatsink, and a 2.6 CHEAP, then I'd love to go with that, but for $41. shipped I figured this was a decent upgrade.

The temp seems to be close to the same as my 1.6.

There's probably a bunch of diagnostic programs that will execise your new CPU if you use Google or Yahoo! to search for them. One of the easiest to obtain and use is what IBM originally supplied with the system: PC Doctor. For the A31, you can get it from here:

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... VGUYW.html

Scroll down to the Diagnostic section and select the "PC Doctor for DOS" (3 diskette version) or "DOS bootable CD" (.ISO image for CDROM; 55MB). Once you boot the system with the diskettes/CD, choose the CPU/Coprocessor and Systemboard tests. You can use the F2 key and change the "Pass Count" value. Refer to my post for more details:

This might be a bit late, but maybe it can help someone else:

The newest PC Doctor for Windows from Lenovo for the newest Thinkpads also works on A31's (or at least I assume so because it worked on my A31p that wasn't specified on the compatibility list).

The tests seem very simliar between the "latest" PC Doctor version that was specified as a download for my A31p and newest version of PC Doctor for Windows that I downloaded for my X60t. The interface of the latter version was noticably more updated, however, and newer is always better, right?
