Thinkpad T60p worth it or not?

#1 Post by DranK » Thu May 24, 2007 11:55 pm

Hello everyone, I am a newbie here as you can see this is my first post.
I have a huge dilemma.
I want to get a Thinkpad to replace my old Toshiba. I do not have a desktop so I want to get a powerful laptop in stead.
My fried is selling his T60p (15.4, CPU T7600, RAM 1GB, HDD 120GB) because he wants to get T61p. The computer is a month old, he asks $1,500 for it. I have no idea how much he paid for it but I checked current prices on lenovo.com and it seems that I am getting a very good deal.

The problem is that I really want to get T61p but I am short on cash now and the max I can spend is $1,800 :( Will I be able to get a decent T61p for that money?

I really don't know what to do.

Could you please advise me on getting my first Thinkpad.

Well you nor the other chap wont get a T61p because they're not available yet.

But you can get a fine new thinkpad for $1800, especially right now with the memorial day sale until may 30.

go to lenovo.com and check for the T-series.

after examining that site, you should be able to satisfy yourself as to how much you're willing to pay for his used one. What type of warranty does he have and for how long? (you can see on the site how much warranties cost)

To the OP: Have you considered ebay at all for your purchases? There are excellent deals on many from there. Just screen the seller. $1,500 sounds steep to me. Well, I did get mine for under $1k. 8)

Well, the other chap and I are aware that T61p is not available yet. :D
I know that I can get a fine thinkpad for 1,800, the problem is I want either T61p or T60p.
The questions I was asking are whether T60p(c2d 2.33ghz , 1gb ram and hdd120gb) worth $1,500 especially now when the T61p is right around the corner, and based on your experience would it be possible to buy decent T61p for under $1,800

p.s. AFAIK I can buy extended warranty on any given day for other manufacturers and I don't think lenovo is an exception so the warranty is kinda not an issue here.

$1,800 plus tax, making it over $1,900 in most states. Also, the OP's friend's T60p is only a month old, so it's almost new. And it's been tested to work, whereas if you order a new one from Lenovo, it might have issues and you'd need to return it, i.e. lots of hassles.

I think it's a tough decision indeed. If it were $1,400 or less, it would be easier. DranK, have you tried asking your friend to bring down the price a little bit?
Microsoft Surface 3 (Atom x7-Z8700 / 4GB / 128GB / LTE)
Dell OptiPlex 9010 SFF (Core i3-3220 / 8GB / 8TB); HP 8300 Elite minitower (Core i7-3770 / 16GB / 9.25TB)

1950 in NY :D but Amex TailorMade will take care of it :D 10% back.

pianowizard, you think that 1,400 is a fair price for his T60p? Ok, I ll make him an offer he can't refuse :D

What do you think about T61p is it going to be available in a month or so? I just have no idea how lenovo price their new products, but seeing that T61 is kinda affordable I made an assumption that T61p is not going to be priced at around 3000.

That seems to be a really good price. A T7600 alone cost around $300 more to upgrade when you order a new T60p. 120GB harddrive cost around $80 more. Add it all up, it will cost you far more what he offer you. Besides, one month of use is still relatively new.

Yep...you got it. lol...I always upgrade and sell my old laptop for more than I bought it for, even after 2 years in one example, and the crazy deal on the T60p with every last option for under $1k. I won't be upgrading until sometime next year probably, but I'll make money again then. Has worked for 10 years. ;)

You bring up ONE EXCELLENT POINT!

There is nothing better than a tried and true machine that has been tested and works as advertised.

Personally, I usually end up putting a fair amount of research into each ThinkPad I order and this has paid off handsomely. In addition, although a good ThinkPad has great resale, I keep the majority of mine and then hand them out to family members as the need arises.

That said there have been a few that I've sold to the public. In each case I've sold them for premium prices by dealing with local business people that have the cash and appreciate an extremely well cared for ThinkPad. In each of those cases (just 3 machines) I have either made money or broken even. A very rewarding result.

Cheers....
