Whats does the IBM security chip REALLY do?

Hi guys

I've been trying to find out what the real purpose of the integrated IBM Security chip is, but i am having trouble finding the right info.

When I look up in my BIOS, the chip is turned OFF by default.

Is it some kind of encryption chip? or what does it do? Will it slow down my system?

I had IT guys in my firm try the security chip. It doesn't seem to slow the system, but (at least when the T40p system arrived) it did have a somewhat clunky interface and required that files be decrypted before they were copied to a file server or sent to another user. The security chip didn't allow us to have files decrypted automatically before being emailed or copied.

We could have replaced all systems, including desktops and servers, with IBMs of recent vintage with security chips and iused the IBM encryption throughout the domain but that would have left a problem for off-site systems that might access the file server.

The marginal benefit of this approach over Windows EFS (which can be penetrated with a lot of effort) seemed more trouble than thant he problem warranted.
