No soundchip in my T40p????

#1 Post by wollvieh » Fri May 25, 2007 1:20 pm

Hi Everybody!
Yesterday I got my used T40p from ebay.
I installed Win XP, everything is working fine but I have no sound!!!
Checking my system control there is no unknown machine or something which could be my AD1981B soundchip. Installing drivers isnt possible because during installation it make a mistake: "no driver found, plz restart computer and try again". But nothing happened after rebooting!
There is also no speaker symbol in the task board and I have no chance to switch volume in the system control. A friend run linux on my T40p and it showed no soundchip!!!!
I was so lucky to buy this T40p to the cheap price of a T40 because seller didnt know. But without sound its not the same!
Can it be possible, that my soundchip is crashed, or is there any IBM configuration, where I have to activate it?! My T40p has not its original HDD with all these IBM-tools. In the BIOS I found nothing.
Is it possible to put a new soundchip on the mainboard, if mine is crashed?! And where on the mainboard is it???
I dont want to sell my T40p again to buy another, because its a good machine with 1,6 GHz, 512 MB, Blue tooth and WLan, latest Bios also installed!

Thanx a lot for your help!!!

PS: speakers are working, pc-speaker is beeping at mistakes.
I just installed pc-doctor to test my system. Result of the audio-test: in this category are no machines available!!!

Did you try downloading and installing the audio drivers for the T40 from IBM's website (use the driver matrix option)?

Well, it's possible that your soundchip is fried, but not the most likely explanation. And it definitely didn't get made without one!

Try going into "Control Panel" and "Add New Hardware" and see if you can bring up an unidentified hardware icon. Also try installing the IBM audio drivers (I believe it's an EXE file and after downloading it, you have to manually run it).

Good luck!

I was wrong, I have a T40, not T40p.
But the one with the ATI Mobility Radeon 9000 and 14.1" TFT display with 1400x1050 resolution.

Thanx, but nothing helped.

I tried the IBM Audio drivers and they didnt work. I couldnt install them. Installation stopped automaticely.
PC-Doctor said, there is no chip.
I tried also to find an unidentified hardware, but there is everything ok, only my chip isnt. The audio- video- gamecontroller shows only codecs and no hardware like the AD1981B chip.
Im frustrated....
Maybe I have to buy an old T40 mainboard and try to change the chip.
But I dont know, where on the board the chip is.

Did you follow the installation instructions for the Audio Driver? Note that one of the steps is to run Setup.exe. Did you install the Intel Chipset drivers?

Drivers and software - ThinkPad T40, T40p, T41, T41p

Try running a PC Doctor for DOS CD to check out your system and rule out a Windows driver problem.

I installed Intel drivers. I also installed AC97 audio drivers.
PC Doctor says "sound card: n/a"
So I think I have no sound card or its broken.....

it could be a virus / malware prob. i had simular symptoms with a compaq w/nosound
booting with a ubuntu live cd(very simple btw) gave me sound so i re-installed xp while being careful to add vaccine / anti spyware first.
this solved it for me...

hope this helps...

check warranty NOW

#12 Post by rrgane » Sun May 27, 2007 9:37 am

to my untrained, and non-professional ears it sounds as if you are correct in your original diagnoses that your soundchip is fried. reason being: you have a fresh install and it did not load drivers initially, XP does not recognize that there is a piece of hardware in a functional state that it has not installed drivers for, trying to manually install the correct drivers aborts installation, and when booting a Linux CD, Linux does not recognize a soundcard present.

there is one other place i would look and that is the BIOS, i do not have my T40 with me, and do not know the BIOS by heart, but i would poke around in there to see if perhaps the integrated peripherals have a enable/disable option.

i would go NOW (do not pass go, do not collect $200) to Lenovo and check to see if your machine is still under warranty. i just bought my T40 used and it still had 20 days left on the original warranty.. there is a good chance that you still may have a few days..

if all the above goes horribly wrong, and nothing works, you might want to consider buying a small pair of USB powered speakers. they are in themselves their own 'soundcard' so it would bypass the whole issue of the non-functional integrated soundcard. not exactly the same i know, but truth be told, the speakers on the T40 series suck anyway. i have a pair of Altec Lansing XT1's and they sound delicious.

well, while that is a possibility, it is making system beeps, and that wouldn't explain why XP and Linux deny seeing a sound card

Nice news!
Today I found my soundchip under the bluetooth-card. It looked quite good, no damage or something.
I cleaned it and checked the contact to the mainboard. As I fixed my T40 again and started WinXP, there was a new hardware and as I installed the driver I had to boot my T40 again. As WinXP went down, I could hear the XP music!!!
So, it seems that my problem is solved!
Thanx for your help guys.

A happy T40 user!

Just cleaning it fixed it?

My guess is you will probably have to re-solder it or the fix won't be permanent.

As I fixed my T40, WinXP also found my modem again and I had to install modem drivers a second time.
Maybe the modem caused a small contact to the soundchip like a short circuit or something else?!
The small feet of my soundchip are all well. I checked them with a needle. So I hope I dont have to re-sold the chip.

i may be completely talking out my @ss here, but i seem to recall that the modem, sound card and blue tooth daughterboard(s) all have a special relationship to each other (may even be all on the same daughterboard). can someone who knows more then me confirm or deny this?
