How can I find out Serial number if not in eeprom?[pic]

#1 Post by fahim » Sun May 27, 2007 5:43 am

Hi,
I bought a T60 with Product number: 2008-Z45.

The problem is that the sticker has been removed and in the Bios/eeprom there is nothing saved about the product or serial number. So I cant get any information by any software. I know that I can write down my serial number with this hardware diskette, but first I have to find out which serial I do have.

Can anybody tell me if the serial is anywhere on the systemboard graved?
Thanks

As far as I know, no it's not.
"I've come a long, long way," she said, "and I will go as far,
With the man who takes me from my horse, and leads me to a bar."
The man who took her off her steed, and stood her to a beer,
Were a bleary-eyed Surveyor and a DRUNKEN ENGINEER.

Nope... If you got a system without the serial in the eeprom, then the motherboard has (most likely) been replaced. If it's not on the bottom of the machine, you're probably out of luck.

I would contact the business/person that you purchased it from.

*** Actually... There may be another way. I would call Lenovo. I know that there are serial numbers on the motherboards (not the machine's serial, but the motherboards serial). The number is located underneath the RAM slots under the palmrest. It should start with 1S.

Lenovo should keep records of all of their warranty claims. They should know what machine your motherboard was put into. If you tell them your situation, there is a chance that they can tell you your machine's serial number. I'm not positive that they keep those records (or that the person you get on the phone will know about them), but I do know that there is a serial right next to the FRU number, located under the RAM slot.

good luck.

Hi,
thank you very much for this tip. Here is my serial of my mainboard (perhaps we got here any ibm employee who ca nhel me?!)

Image

I called the hotline, but they told me that it is impossible to find out the serial (even if you got the serial of the mainboard).

But I am a bit wondered about that. Because I could try to find out any serial number and write it into the eeprom, and so I had more warranty?! I will not do that and know that this is ilegal, but is IBM not safeguarded for that?

Well... I was under the impression that they do keep track of that information for exactly that reason. I guess that could have been mis-infomation. What's the point of having serial numbers if you don't use them?

Over the phone they will tell you they can't, but if you are able to send it in somehow [under different valis SN], they should be able to pull it.

Happened to me, don't ask how they did it, I don;t know.

And then they will send me a bill of some hundred euros just for checking the serial :D No thanks.

The seller sold this unit without warranty, so I think I will let me thinkpad as it is. But thanks very much
