[A22m]Does it have Ethernet connection?

#1 Post by frankiepankie » Sun May 27, 2007 6:56 am

Hi there,
I am planning to buy an Thinkpad A22m but i don't know if it has an Ethernet connection.

I have read here on the forum, that some A22m have a connector, but that the mini-PCI is missing.

If it doesn't have an Ethernet connection, and so it has an modem PCI card i was thinking about putting an wifi card in the modem slot and use an USB to Ethernet device for ethernet.

So:
  • Is the A22m WiFi prepared? (Are there antenna's in the screen?)
  • Do all models have Ethernet?
  • Are there much problems with A22m? Like boot problems etc?
Thanks from a big thinkpad fan 8)

Here is what I found about A22m :
-User-installable mini-PCI options including modem only or modem-LAN combination cards
-Wireless LAN solution via optional PC card (requires an Access Point)
-RJ-45 and RJ-11 connectors standard on all systems

Wireless in A22m

#4 Post by olex126 » Wed May 30, 2007 7:27 am

My wife's A22m came with wired ethernet , but no wireless (no antenna in the screen). I recently had to replace the screen, and purchased one with the antenna built-in. Now all I have to do is purchase the wireless card. Not in any rush, since she is using a Netgear PCCard 511T wireless connection anyway.

Absolutely no problems with the A22m in the 4 years she's owned it. The only reason we replaced the screen was because our grandson decided to use it as a drum. Trust me, Thinkpad screens are NOT meant to be pounded on with a wooden stick.

I think a moderator can close my topic, because the A22m i was looking for, was already sold

And in The Netherlands, Thinkpads are very hard to find on second hand sites.

Thanks for helping guys

Some A22m's did come with internal wifi built in. However, it was implemented in a unique/strange way. One of the two PC Card slots was used to accomodate an 802.11b PC Card. This PC Card slot, the top one, was masked and the eject button was modifed so it couldn't be used. Antennas were run through the LCD cover, as on other TP's.

A very unique wifi PC Card was used, so I'm not certain if this can be upgraded with a faster wifi adapter.

There is an IBM Hardware Maintenance Manual just for this model, the A22m's with wireless.

Anyway, unless you have this model, you do not have built in antennnas and you have to choose what to put in the one mini-pci slot on the bottom of the machine - modem, ethernet, modem/ethernet combo, modem/wifi 802.11b combo, or other wifi adapter. There are modem and ethernet ports on all A2x machines and the proper connectors are sitting by the mini-pci slot under the cover. If you select wifi, you'll have to add an antenna (or two).

Good luck.

A22m

I have an A22e. I don't know why you would want to buy such an old machine. mine has ethernet, but no wifi built in. I think the A series has had problems with the motherboards. my unit is a Celeron, so the memory is more limited than the PIII. I have had to replace the
LCD, the motherboard, and the original hard drive recently stopped working.

I made a huge mistake by not buying the extended warranty.

on the other hand, the screen was nice and crisp. and the overall feel of thinkpads is very nice.

I now have a T43P that I am happy with. great screen, nice keyboard.

if I was going to buy a used ThinkPad, I think I would go with the T series.
