T61 BSOD

#1 Post by ryengineer » Sun May 27, 2007 11:53 pm

I talked about this here. The BSOD said to "STOP: 0x00008086 (0x00000000, 0x00000000, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)".
About this error Windows Vista "Event Viewer" reported "The device, \Device\Ide\iaStor0, did not respond within the timeout period". I checked everything inside out, it was a factory installed Vista with AHCI option in the BIOS.

I thought I had this problem solved by installing the "Intel matrix storage drivers" but I've just received a voice message from my co-worker notifying me of another BSOD. Apparently when I had the machine, I left it turned on for a while after installing the drivers and it did not give me any BSOD.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I am having the exact same problem with my new T61, I just got it on Friday and it BSOD's at least 5 times a day with the same error. My T61 is a 766416U, I might call Lenovo today and see what they think. It also runs really slow, takes approx 5-6 minutes to fully boot into Vista, I have upgraded the RAM to 2GB but the boot times are very slow still. Is that normal for this type of Thinkpad?

Did you guys do the RAM upgrade(s) yourself?

This smells of either a BIOS problem or a memory parity error.

I did the upgrade myself but it was BSODing even before that, it even bluescreened during the initial boot of Vista when I first turned the laptop on

I would definitely call Lenovo then.

I've only had a T61 in hand for a few days (and it's gone now), so there is little I and most people can do to help here except report our experiences.

Looks to me like possibly a BIOS setting for the hard drive controller isn't correct. I don't have my T61 yet, so I don't know what settings are there, but that's where I'd look for sure.

Google on Device\Ide\iaStor0 and you'll find a lot of people seeing this with different PCs and what they've done to resolve.

I believe that this will be solved with one of the following: a BIOS update, an Intel Matrix Storage Manager update, or with a different model or brand of hard drive.

I had a similar problem on a desktop PC with an ABIT motherboard running a RAID 0 setup. It was a timing problem between the BIOS and the Maxtor SATA drives. A BIOS update solved the problem (which was listed as a fix in the BIOS update .txt file).

I ordered that same drive on my T61 (due to ship soon,) so I hope I'm not going to have to troubleshoot as soon as it arrives. :(

I talked to Lenovo and ran the HDD Diagnostic within Rescue and Recovery. It seems that the HDD is defective as it failed the surface scan test, they are going to send me a new HDD. I will keep you guys up to date as to what happens from this point.

Not to take up for Lenovo, but on this one I would blame UPS or whomever the delivery company was.

Bad sectors on a NEW drive almost always indicates it was dropped hard enough to cause the read/write head to crash into the platter surface.

I'm sure the box was packed well enough that there was no physical damage to the laptop, but the HD can have serious problems even if there are no signs of obvious abuse.

No, I only remember seeing 1 factory installed memory in the machine.

Jimco wrote:Google on Device\Ide\iaStor0 and you'll find a lot of people seeing this with different PCs and what they've done to resolve.
I already did, people usually solved it by installing the intel matrix drivers, as I mentioned in my 1st post as well.

There was no BIOS update available at that time (two days ago), not even now.

What if I tell you I ran the same HDD test and it showed nothing and completed successfully, even going back to factory state did not help. I wish I could try something more on the machine but I had returned it back to the owner who informed me this morning of his getting in touch with lenovo.

It wasn't UPS i picked up my notebook directly from Tech Data Distribution warehouse, i guess something must have happened to it in the warehouse.[/quote]

Active Protection driver problem?

#14 Post by larsv » Sat Jun 02, 2007 2:07 am

Try turning off the Active Protection.

I got that same BSOD (at least I think so, I remember it saying 8086). Sometimes when I tilted the computer to the left I got BSOD. After I turned off Active Protection it stopped happening.

Then again, it doesn't happen now. Perhaps it went away when I did a clean Vista install.

My blue screens have gone away now that I turned off the Active Protection. I guess the APS software is pausing the hard drives at bad times when Vista isn't liking it. I am glad I found this post since I was about to get a replacement T61. Thanks for the help!

I think it would be good if one of you tried out memtest86(+) on your laptops. It would be interesting if Lenovo was shipping bad memory modules.

I don't believe this is the case. I purchased an additional GB of Crucial RAM at the same time and tried various combinations thinking RAM had to be the culprit. I also cloned the 120gb hard disk to a known working 80gb drive I had around. The blue screen continued through all that. While I did not run Memtest I did run Orthos for about 2hours after disabling the APS and have not been able to duplicate the blue screen since.

Active Protection also occasionally cause blue screens on my T60. I update it the newest version and update BIOS. The problem stops.
Also, I do notice that Vista complains sometimes about it cannot access hard drive.

I talked to Lenovo support about this, they have escalated it to 2nd level and will get back to me about it. The tech i spoke to said since the system is so new there are no updates for it yet but there should be a BIOS update out to address this

I've got a T61 (766416U) and it is having BSOD issues too. It seems to do it more on battery power then plugged in. I have run memtest86+ overnight and no errors showed up at all. So, that's not the problem. But I am going to try the hdd test tonight and see if that's the problem.

The install of vista it shipped with was giving me a lot of problems, but a quick restore (ok, there was nothing quick about it!), and some of the issues were going. I could config the fingerprint reader properly, and vista loaded much faster.

Also, is anyone else getting the error "Error Loading Operating System"?

jsanghavi, if you do find anything out from lenovo, please post it here, and i'm going to be calling them sometime this week if I can't clear it up.

Its too bad I'm having these issues, I've use thinkpads in the past, and loved them. and this one is a really nice size, and feel. Hopefully all will be well!

Is your blue screen the 0x00008086 one? Mine was consistent, every time 0x00008086. It seemed to happen more on battery but that was probably because when it was on battery I wasn't tied down and tended to shift myself and move it more. I never did get any other errors, everything else has been flawless, at least since disablingthe APS for now.

well, i ran it on battery last night playing Civ4 for a couple of hours, and it was fine. odd, but the only thing I changed were the power settings. I didn't let it power down the processor, or shut down the harddrive. I know that sucks for battery, but it didn't hicup at all then. I'm going to try it tonight with the power features turned back on and see what happens.

I was able to resolve this issue on my T61 by installing the latest version of Intel Matrix Storage drivers. It's the driver (iastor.sys) that is causing this crash.

I did that two days ago and not a single problem since.

I got the same blue screen error 0x00008086 as you today. I was trying to resume from a suspended state and was not plugged in at the time. Go figure.

There are indications in this thread that this may be Active Protection-related, and a few people have solved the crashing by either updating the active protection drivers or turning it off altogether.

Has anyone tried turning off active protection, with no effect on the BSOD frequency?

I have an update on this matter.

My co-worker whose machine is in lenovo's possession since a week, got a call from them saying they did not have any clue what's wrong with the T61. Moreover he was told that they had formatted the HDD (in despair he believed), just to find out later, recovery disks are not available in Canada for T61 as of yet, adding another week or so in getting them and returning the machine back to him. I did little  for a while after hearing his so called dreadful tale. He told me he's going back to macbooks again. I pity some people who don't practise patience in such situations, although such a thing is surely going to piss off many.
