T61 BSOD
Possible source of problem on our X60s
I have a half dozen X60 tablets here and all of them started doing the BSOD after running the update utility in the ThinkPad Productivity Center. The update included a newer version of the Intel Matrix Storage drivers. After running the update, tablets started doing BSODs after boot. I was able to run the XP system restore from safe mode and back up to before the updates and get the system back. I ran the IBM updates again and selected all but the Intel driver update. Systems are all running correctly now. The driver that came on the tablets is 7.0.0.1020 and is working.
here's a strange thing that happened to me last night, i ran the thinkvantage update program, got the intel update and an nvidia update. The intel update actually seems to help, cause all went well last night using it. But the nvidia update messed things up nicely. after a reboot, my display driver was set to Default VGA display. ouch. no 3d for me! I used a system restore point to go back, and everything is back where it should be.
but it defiantly seems to be running better, that's with APS turned on, and the power settings at normal settings. so I'm not sure what happened, but its running nicely now.

hey guys, I just received my T61 yesterday and it already blue screened at least 3 times
Do you recommend using Lenovos driver update, or should I install the Intel Matrix driver myself (as it seems to be one of the possible causes)? Is there a way to be sure this is not a hardware issue... I just want to rule that out so I don't run out of the return period.
Oh, and is it normal that a factory restore take over 1h :S

It is normal because of the crappy Active Protection and Turbo Memory driver. Turn them off you should see less BSOD.
Or best of all, like what I did, reinstall XP and all your problem will be gone for good.

have you installed xp on a t61? if so, where did you find the sata drivers for the xp installer? i was thinking about doing that, but you need to use nlite to build a new install cd to have it all work. and i just haven't made time to get it all together.XIII wrote:It is normal because of the crappy Active Protection and Turbo Memory driver. and jdhar, I used the lenovo updater, and the intel update worked fine for me. it actually seemed to help. but the nvidia update doesn't work. at least for me it messed things up.
I set SATA in the BIOS in Compatibility mode so I don't have to go through the trouble of installing SATA driver during XP installation.

I'm keeping APS off on mine and have been bluescreen free ever since. I don't drop my laptops so I will take the risk. I don't think so unless you overwrite XP installation into the recovery partition. SATA compatibility simply introduces and IDE passthrough to make the software think that your SATA drive is an IDE drive.

After you install XP, install all the latest patches, updates, especially chipset driver. Then download and install Intel Matrix Storage Driver. After you have done so, switch back to AHCI.

I've been seeing BSODs since receiving my T61 on Monday. Last evening I restored the system to the factory default, thinking it was something I installed -- no luck. I'm continuing to see the crashes.
I see this in the event viewer:
The device, \Device\Ide\iaStor0, did not respond within the timeout period.
I've seen issues with my T60, but nothing like this T61!

That is part of the Intel Matrix Storage and Turbo Driver. I uninstalled them and have not experienced any crash since then.

This fixed the problem for me (iaStor, not iaStorV). The new Matrix Drivers didn't solve it.

Yeah, I was getting that error for a long time. Reinstalling VISTA on my Thinkpad t61 did not help.codwif wrote:

I've now found a solution for this, though .... You have to apply the "Hard drive firmware update" released by Lenovo on 10/2/2007. You can download it here:

You have to burn the ISO to a bootable CD ... I used a trial version of CloneCD for this.
(I have the latest version of the Lenovo "System Update" utility installed on my laptop, and for some reason it does not detect a need for this and several other updates and does not offer them as downloads. I don't know why that would be, since according to the web site this hard-drive firmware-update utility is clearly applicable to my system.)

The Stop 0x8086 errors seem to be related to a bug specifically in ReadyDrive, and power management under Vista.
To resolve, either disable readydrive entirely, or, under Vista (not thinkpad) power management, for each power plan being used, select plan settings, then select "change advanced settings" then under 'Hard Disk" disable "Windows Hybrid Hard Disk power Savings mode".
Someone from Lenovo really, REALLY needs to look at this. This settting also causes a number of UI "freezes" as well.
Note that upgradeing the Intel Robson drivers from the Intel web site won't work. Also note that if you DO upgrade, make SURE you run the setup utility. Do NOT upgrade flash driver from device manager, as the setup utility also installs the correct firmware on the flash device, to match the driver.
Finally, Vista SP1 still doesn't fix this..its an Intel/Lenovo problem.
And, of course, the Nvidia drivers are still #@(%)( garbage.

ignore any prompts that say you may be installing drivers older than what is currently installed
install the matrix storage driver after the turbo driver WITHOUT restarting. (the turbo memory already installs a matrix driver, but for some idiotic reason by intel, it is the old one)
restart your computer
then go to [Control Panel]->[Power Options]->[Change plan settings]->[Change advanced power settings]->[Hard disk]->[Windows Hybrid Hard Disk Power Savings Mode].
disable the Windows Hybrid Hard Disk Power Saving option

Unfortunately, Lenovo IS ultimately responsible, since they are the OEM. Just as with the pathetic shape of the Nvidia drivers, Intel will not support us directly on the Robson driver..all support must go through the OEM, Lenovo, who is ultimately responsible.
So, Lenovo MUST work with Nvidia, Intel, and Microsoft to debug these issues and resolve the problems. As end users, we can't deal with their suppliers directly.
