Thinking of getting rid of desktop, and going all laptop...

#1 Post by pat » Sun Oct 10, 2004 3:04 pm

So who's done it? Who's gotten rid of their desktop and gone laptop? Why'd you do it?

I've been thinking about this lately.

I haven't had a desktop since the TP755CE came out (1995-ish?). I gave it up because I was traveling, and it was too much trouble to keep a desktop and a notebook in sync. I always seemed to need something from the other machine.

Laptop vs. Desktop

For the obvious reason, to save space. Plus its portable.

I move a lot. a laptop with a high resolution is so convenient....plus I can work in my comfy sofa (or bed)

I got a laptop for when I traveled and found myself never really using the desktop machine after I did, maybe 8 years ago. It took me a while to make the decision as I was certain I'd need more expansion slots, but when I bought a docking station for cheap I sold the desktop unit, then never used the docking station and sold that, too. Ditto on finding it a pain in the [censored] to keep the desktop and laptop in synch, and on being able to work from the comfy couch. It also takes up a lot acreage on my desk.

I have been asking myself the same question ever since I got my t41. :D
I find that I can do pretty much everything on my laptop.
My only reasons to keep the desktop are gaming and storage. Storage isn't a big deal because I can use file servers or external hard drive enclosure. But I am spoiled by my desktop when it comes to games: doom 3, 1600x1200 @ high quality (58fps)...and with hl2 coming up... I just can't seem to let go the desktop. :p

So yeah if I didn't play all the latest games.. I would sell the desktop. Right now I just use the laptop for work..and desktop is all play.

I've always had notebooks, I love the portability. But the only reason I'd have desktops would be for the kids, it's much easier and more cost effective to maintain.

I've gone all laptop, it's great. But I'm kinda cheating as my thinkpad is hooked up to an external LCD monitor and a USB keyboard. So I basically have a desktop with a really small case. Still I much prefer it to my old desktop and huge 21" CRT monitor, that thing was a monster.

Same here... mainly just play games on my desktop & use the TP for everything else.
