Cell phone memory picture card slot?

#1 Post by Sand » Mon May 28, 2007 11:51 am

Hello,

Could someone tell me if there is a slot somewhere on my laptop that is used for a picture memory card from a cell phone, the SD Micro for the LG VX 8300? I would like to be able to take pics and then transfer them from my cell to my laptop. I've looked at the descriptions on Access IBM but can't see where it would fit. I don't know if this is a standard feature on laptops or not so maybe IBM does not provide one? If so, do I need to purchase a special cable to connect the cell phone to the computer? I already called Verizon to ask this but they are not familiar with IBM's laptop accessories to be able to answer me on this.

I have the T42 2379 DXU.

Thanks for any help in advance.

T42 series has no built-in (micro/mini/standard) SD card reader. You can simply buy a USB or PCMCIA SD/MicroSD reader. MicroSD card with a SD adapter can be used in a standard SD reader.

Cell phone memory picture card slot?

#3 Post by Sand » Mon May 28, 2007 2:23 pm

Thanks Sugo for your quick reply.I won't pretend I understand about the other kind of reader, but I have several USB cables that I could use if I buy the right Reader. I just don't know what you mean about the 'standard SD reader.' Is that what I have now?
Since I opened this package, I doubt that Verizon will let me return it for 34.99. Will it work for anything else? And, can I buy this other USB reader in places like Target or Radio Shack? I'm so unknowledgable about all this stuff!

Thanks again for your help,
Sandra

well...

Micro SD is just smaller than SD, other parameters are the same so you can use an adapter looking like half of an SD card.
Then the micro SD in the adapter looks like normal SD card and you can plug it in a SD reader.

Standart SD reader is just a normal SD reader it looks like this for example:
http://www.comparestoreprices.co.uk/ima ... colour.jpg
one side is plugged to USB and you place the card in the slot on the other side.
you can buy a reader which can read many different cards and then probably it would read micro SD without the adapter + normal SD, mmc, momeory stick and others...

Did you get a MicroSD-to-SD adapter with your MicroSD card?

If so, all you need is an SD reader. They're not that expensive.

If you really want a bargain, this one works well for $3.00 shipping included.

You'd need a MicroSD to SD adapter though.

Cell phone memory picture card slot?

#8 Post by Sand » Mon May 28, 2007 6:30 pm

GnatGoSplat,

It's called 3-in-1 on the receipt. It's SanDisk and there are really three things in there ; a small one called 1.0GB MICRO SD, one MICRO SD Adapter and another maller MICRO SD Adapter. They are all different sizes and the salesperson in Verizon said they all fit into one another and then go into the phone or computer, I'm not really sure.
Would these work with the Reader in the picture you sent and if I buy this would I keep these adapters and is that all I need for both the phone and the computer?
Sorry for all the questions, I'm just starting to learn all this stuff.

Thanks,
Sand

Yes, it does sound like you probably got a MicroSD to SD adapter, or if you have to fit an adapter into another adapter, maybe what you got is a MicroSD to MiniSD and a MiniSD to SD. Micros are about the size of a fingernail, Minis are about the size of a postage stamp, and regular SD is larger, the same size used in most digital cameras.

The $3.00 adapter I linked to takes the regular size, but you'd just put your Micro in the appropriate adapters until it will fit. The one I linked to ships from Hong Kong and takes about 2-weeks to get, so if you need it fast you should be able to find the readers anywhere for about $15-20.

GnatGoSplat

Thanks a lot for all that information. That's a good price for that one but I do need it sooner than that so I'll get it another time.

Thanks for all the help,
Sand

I have read that it is very difficult to get a micro SD card out of an SD adapter. I have read that tweezers are required. Can you connect your cell phone to your laptop via a USB cable? Thats what I do with my HTC P3300. Since the micro SD card is behind the battery in this model I never take it out.

tselling,

There are two USB connections on my laptop and I have USB cables but I don't know how to do it. Where do the cables connect to the cell phone? Would I still keep the micro SD card though for the phone and just leave it in there?

If the files you have to copy aren't too large, you can connect via Bluetooth as well. That way you don't need any cables, but Bluetooth isn't as fast as USB or copying directly to the memory card.

I usually use Bluetooth to copy photos and such out of my phone since they aren't very large files.

You can buy Bluetooth dongles that plug into your USB for less than $10, but a slicker (but more expensive) way to get Bluetooth is to get a replacement Bluetooth modem for your T42 that fits inside. I think a seller has them around $35-40 on eBay.

also about speed...
depends on size of the files....

If you have some pictures from te phone the USB cable connected to the phone would be ok, but if you have to upload 512mb of mp3 to the phone it's terribly slow... only reasonable thing to do is to do it using the card reader.

the card reader is much faster than your cell phone

in case you needed it:
the usb cable for you phone looks like this:
http://www.eforcity.com/usb-data-cable- ... j9AyDV7too
and you also probably need some software to copy files.

using an external reader is faster and easier, bot you have to remove the card from your phone.

I've used an adapter-within-an-adapter approach:

Put a CF-Card adapter into your PC-Card slot, then put a SD-Adapter into that. (I've used both the EagleTec brand).

My mobile phone uses a "Mini-SD" type memory card, and came with a SD-Adapter.

So in the end, I could use:

PC-Card Slot
VV
CF-Card-Adapter
VV
SD-Card-Adapter
VV
Mini-SD Memory Card

It works quite well in terms of space saving (takes up any memory card except those proprietary Sony memory sticks.

It doesn't multi-task smoothly though, during transfers to/from PC-Card slot, the Windows UI slows noticably but can still do other computer work.

Cell phone memory picture card slot?

#16 Post by Sand » Tue May 29, 2007 4:53 pm

Hello all,

After reading all your helpful explanations and going to the internet I think I finally understand what I'm supposed to use to send pics from my cell to my pc. I think they are the two things I have included at the bottom of this post i.e. a Micro SD Card and a Reader.

I hope this is right and these prices at Amazon seem better compared to Verizon which was 34.99 for just the MicroSD Card. That's why I'm wondering if I'm buying the same thing. I also read about a SanDisk Cruzer USB Flashdrive. Is this just another form of the Reader?

All these technical terms are unfamiliar and confusing to me right now.

Thanks for any replies,
Sand

The 2 things from your links are exactly what you need :)

A card to carry all the photos and other stuff
and a reader to transfer the data to you computer :)

about the flashdrive...
I dont exactly know about sandisk but i saw some time ago a flashdrive (pendrive) with a SD reader in it from other vendor.
So it was a SD reader + a 1gb USB disk - kind of a portable memory like a CD-R but technologically different, easy to use, small, rewritable and in windows seens as a new hard drive :)
The reader I saw was only SD so you would need an adapter MicrSD -> SD.

IMHO the things you've chosen (card+reader) are the best choice for you :)
