Matt kahout blasts vista

#1 Post by gator » Tue May 29, 2007 11:17 am

From his article on Lenovoblogs:
The question that really needs to be answered is whether moving to Vista has made me more productive. If we exclude setup and install time, my answer (for now at least), is no. I’m able to get most of my work done, but I find myself waiting for the operating system too much. I spend time searching for features that are in different places than they were located in XP.

Not exactly a valid point.

Yes, they've changed the locations of several features - but it's for the better. How can they ever change and improve something if people start complaining about it not being where it used to?

I've used Vista Ultimate version on my X31 and my views are somewhat same as Matts.

I get my work done on XP and OpenSuse. Vista is very much a foreign territory for me.

I wouldn't really say he blasts Vista. It sounds like he likes a lot of the new features and is going through a period of becoming accustomed to where everything is located.

When I first switched to Vista, I was very disappointed with it at first too, but now I've become rather accustomed to it after using it for several months and prefer it over XP. I like it even better now that I've even found ways to turn off all those security features that I found to be highly annoying.

I don't know why his hard drive is grinding away all the time. Just the other day I was marveling to my wife how amazing it was my T43 w/Vista and 2GB of RAM hardly ever accesses the hard drive. I can browse from website to website and all I ever get is a brief flash of the HD and no delay whatsoever.

I actually had a LOT harder time getting accustomed to Office 2007. I'm sure it's better, but at first I hated it. Once, it took me forever to figure out how to print a document, because I didn't realize I had to look for the Print functions under the pulsating orb. I'm getting better and liking it better, but it certainly wasn't love at first sight.

On your X31 how fast is your video card? I cant play videos on Vista on my Thinkpad A20m, also my Mp3 player cant read on my usb 2.0 pcmcia card.

I watched tv episodes on my X31 when it had Vista on it and it worked fine. Overall sluggishness was the same as when browsing etc.

I don't really mind the changes to where everything is located. Sure, they are not really "exactly" where they were in Vista but everything still made sense.

In terms of performance I find Vista plenty fast for everything that I want to do.

Sure gaming isn't too fast, but it wasn't too fast in XP either, after all its a T60 with the x1300, not really the best gaming computer. That said, I can still play wow and guild wars on it fine, in fact, I can play guild wars at 1920x1200 on my external LCD.

If I did have a complaint though, it would be the changes to hibernate / suspend mode where the screen goes blank instead of showing you the progress.

I do notice a little loss of performance under Wow but I also use the stock ATI drivers so I can't complain (at least not until I update them.)

The specs. for my X31 are 1.7GHz, 512 MB memory, 40GB HDD and 16MB RADEON ATI gpu.

Even though most features of Vista like aero is not supported but I'm able to utilize this machine very well to do all the everyday stuff including checking emails, browsing, word processing, watching movies, listening to music, transferring pictures via usb and even going wireless. Honestly this machine has done more than what I expected it to do under Vista.

Here is Vista rating which don't do the justice.
