i want to get a serial port for my embedded application...

someone mentioned in another forum that a usb->bluetooth->serial dongle would work....

to me the thinkpad already has bluetooth, so the usb part of the dongle is redundant...

so my question is...is there are straight blue-tooth to serial adapater?

and how does my programs recognize that the bluetooth port is a serial port? <--this is my main concern...

thanks,
fred

you can try getting a mini-dock as this includes 2 serial ports.

first off, i dont' want a dock since they are bulky...

and second... i don't want a usb to serial since it uses wires...

i've seen bluetooth serial modules out on the market... i was wondering just how does the bluetooth act as the serial port... (how does my program understand that the bluetooth is the serial port?)

if i go into a terminal...it asks me which com port etc..not which bluetooth port.... so i was wondering if i get a bluetooth module... (i was hoping you guys would tell me) how would the terminal communicate?

thanks,
fred

if you were to open up "My Bluetooth Places" and click on the "View My Bluetooth Services" link on the right side you will see what services your bluetooth adapter supports. One of those services is a "serial port" service. You can imagine the rest from there...

This has worked well for me. I have tried quite a number of adapters, but I found this to be the best.

I have a usb to serial adapter you can have for $10.00 shipped that I use to use when I tested phone software. Email me at arielb@gmail.com if you're interested.

The serial-BT communication layer is transparent to applications. The module will create a virtual com port on your computer. It will become another com port which you can choose from the terminal. This is the same way it works with a USB dongle too.
