Does this sound right?

#1 Post by mrbjr » Wed May 30, 2007 9:47 am

My T60P has the 14' SXGA+ screen and the difference between WINXP and Vista are incredible. In Vista the veiwing angle has increased as has the clarity. Just wondering if anyone else noticed, very big difference between it and my T41P and nearly as nice as the T42P

The viewing angle should not be any different (that's purely LCD hardware, not OS) but I believe that Vista will default to having ClearType on by default.

mrbjr, would you check how good the screen looks when you reduce the resolution to 1024x768? Under XP, non-native resolutions look terrible, but under Vista, they should look halfway decent.

pianowizard, checked all the different resolutions and they all looked 100% better than on my T41P. Also the veiwing angle is quite a bit better, you can be a few degrees off center left or right. Subjective at best

Fine that you have such a nice experience.

But from technical standpoint this has nothing to do with Vista or XP. The only difference between this two os are:

On Vista Cleartype is enabled by default and the system fonts are improved for better on-screen readablility and changed (XP uses Tahoma 8 pt., Vista SegoeUI 9 pt.).

But IMHO, Cleartype makes things worse.

I think Cleartype is a very personal preference thing. I generally prefer it in most circumstances -- but only after going through the quickie tuning step to get the best results. Although it's conceivable that the Lenovo Vista preload has been pre-tuned ...

I have not tried the Cleartype tuner, but in my experience I do not like the default results on an XGA display, but the results are fine on an SXGA+ display (both 14.1").

I agree cleartype is definately a personal preference, and I can't stand to not have it, all the thinkpads I have owned were vastly better with cleartype on and tuned.

Kwoon, I'm glad you asked that question reference to the better non-native res in Vista because I remember reading that vista was "supposed" to do a better job than XP, need to check mine out later.

Check out the "ClearType Tuning" control panel applet (in XP, not sure where it is on Vista) -- it's amazing how much difference you can make.

Is that on the Control Panel menu? I can't find it.

I just activated ClearType and for a moment I thought I had tears in my eyes! Things looked much fuzzier.

Yes, it is in the Control Panel Menu (unless you use the online version). However you have to download the tuner from Microsoft and install it first.

Sorry, it looks like I installed it afterward. You can find it here:

PW, give it a try and see whether you can look at it without crying after some tuning. ;)

Thanks both of you for the links. Tried it, got ClearType to look better than before, but I still prefer the sharpness of non-ClearType texts. To each his own!

I agree, it's everyones personal preference. I'm too for the sharp looking text without Cleartype. Sometimes Cleartype getting me headdaches after sitting in front of the computer for hours. Even if it's tuned i still feel that it makes the text heavier to read for my eyes.
